The flat take up arm belt on my Eiki SSL started making noisy creaking sounds, particularly during rewinding. I happened to have a spare, which immediately cured the problem. I wondered if anyone with appropriate knowledge would say that the problem belt wass past it and should be binned, or could (e.g.) perhaps some belt grip, vaseline, or something be applied that would stop the noise and save me from having to use the spare yet?

If simple cleaning with denatured alchol won't remedy the problem then it's time to just replace it. The belts do have two sides and make sure the proper side is down. It doesn't sound like it's a slipping problem but more likely dirt or just old and stretched.
