I had the pleasure of attending a Sons of the Desert meeting recently. Being a pretty big fan of Laurel and Hardy I decided I wanted to find out what it was all about, so I found out when and where the next local meeting was and showed up with my 6 year old son and an open mind.
We started out by singing the Sons of the Desert Anthem:
Join in with me!:
We are the Sons of the Desert, Having the time of our lives. Marching along, two thousand strong, Far from our sweethearts and wives, God bless them. Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, the boys are marching, And dancing to this melody. Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, Sons of the Desert are we!
..and then had Root Beer toasts to Stan and Babe and Finn.
We watched “Way out West” projected about 10 feet across from a VHS recorded off cable TV (…it was more than a little muddy). I silently resolved that if I become active there will be reel film in their future at least a few times.
It has to be the most lighthearted club I’ve ever attended, as it should be. The people were friendly and made us feel very much at home. My son won a cowboy hat as a door prize and wore it throughout the feature. They were pleasantly surprised to see such a little kid enjoying the Lads, but that’s what he’s been exposed to since he was barely able to walk.
Is there anybody else here involved with the Sons?
