Just a fun curious note ...

I was watching the "Image Entertainment" DVD release of the Buster Keaton double feature ...

Steamboat Bill
The General

and on the DVD, as well as the case, it stated ...

"From the BlackHawk Collection"

... which means they must have gotten the master material for these releases from Blackhawk (of course). The interesting thing is that, by 2003, (when this DVD was released), how many people besides actual film collectors, would even recognize the "Blackhawk name and what it stands for?

... and who, besides us Super 8 and 16MM film collectors would have had the extreme pleasure of viewing Blackhawk films, long before this DVD age ever got ahold of Blackhawk?

I would take that with a grain of salt. David Shepard bought the Blackhawk library and started selling prints through Film Preservation Associates in 16mm. He ceased taking orders in mid-2008. Any of these titles that are on DVD with his name on them carry the Blackhawk designation. For some of the 16mm ones, and certainly all titles issued on recent DVDs, he did additional restoration, usually by getting upgraded pre-print material, usually original fine-grains or in some cases the original camera negatives. In all cases for DVD, I'm almost positive that he sourced from 35mm material. Blackhawk never released any higher than 16mm.

Just a note...

My DVD's of the silent classics "The Lost World" and "Nosferatu" both bear the Blackhawk logo on the back cover and I do believe they are also from Image Entertainment.
