I have a friend at work who is very big into RC aircraft. He bought a house a couple of years ago and the story goes that every ceiling in the house has some (-or several) small aircraft dangling from it. (...he's single.)

He's a nice guy: follows tales of my Amphibious Jeep project with great interest and helps where he can (-he could probably build one in a week!). He's been making some hard to fabricate parts for me with 3D printing.

He told me a story this morning:

A few years ago he was at a major RC event. This guy is flying this scratch-built jet powered B-52 bomber, doing lazy passes back and forth across the field. Suddenly he really throttles up, does this scorching flyover, but something goes wrong and the thing spirals into the ground and makes this small, flaming, expensive crater.

There he is, standing there stunned with his now useless RC controller still in his hands:

-from behind him, his...Wife speaks up:

"Well, there goes twenty thousand dollars."

-so if you bought a couple of films or even a projector this month...

-It's okay!

I bought two films this week: I just may be speaking to myself here!

What's funny is my simple little Jeep model cost me relatively nothing and took relatively no time. The first time I sailed it at the Ocean Holiday I was prepared to dive into the pool fully clothed if it became "Women and Children to the lifeboats". (We tried it in the sink first...)

I can't imagine taking a model that costs a hundred times as much and took a hundred times as much effort and (you know...) Flying it!

-but that's why they do it and I don't! (More power to 'em!)

Yeahhh!

-my wife is even on public record being pretty hobby-tolerant (-some might say "supportive"), but some years ago (-well...decades, really) I bought an air compressor (-different hobby)

-she asked me: "How much did that cost?"

-I said: "$250"

-She said: "For THAT?!!"

-I said: "You asked: don't blame me if you don't like the answer!"

(-and we weren't even married yet!)

I don't want to seem critical here: If I had the time and the bucks I just might pursue a hobby like that. (Live steam locomotives, maybe.)

-I also admire the absolute gutsiness of taking the cash equivalent of a very respectable used car and launching it into the skies like that!

My version of that is waiting for a print to show up and saying "-cost me twenty bucks! I hope it's not scratched and faded!"
