I'm weathering through Hurricane Irene by watching lots of super 8 movies. Scars of Dracula is on right now with the background noise of heavy rain hitting my windows. I just hope the power doesn't go off! Then I won't know how to entertain myself. Hope everyone else on the east coast is in a safe place...

I'm doing the same, except I've got the 16mm projector going. First Warlords of Atlantis, now a scope print of The Man Who Would Be King.

I projected two reels of Fantasia: "Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony" and "Bach's Toccata and Fugue" with audio cranked a little.
I figure with all the nasty stuff that can happen on power lines duting a storm it's smart to unplug the machines even if the power stays on, so I wanted something that would hold me a while.

I had the GS-1200 out for some excercise and ran a 1907 Pathe historical re-creation of the Russia/Japan war of 1896, complete with "special effects" (self-powered model ships blowing up.)
Then it was on to some home movies from the 70es. No outages in my area; the big storm hit came between 1-5am.

The night after the winds died down (and I was sure we weren't going to lose our roof) I showed one Laurel and Hardy (You're Darn Tootin'!) and one Our Gang (Hook and Ladder).
I'm guessing this was a change in mood from Beethoven and Bach the night before.
We got off very lightly: just some branches and leaves and the loss of cable for about 24 hours (Phone, Internet, TV). Power stayed up the whole time, yet the next block is still dark.
I saw kind of a sad scene when we went out on bikes after the storm: a Dad and his 20 something daughter looking at a shiny red car with a tree branch laying on the roof. From the expression on her face I bet it was hers.

I did fine here in the city as did most people ... but check out this Youtube video of the town where my weekend house (with all my super 8 films are stored). Luckily, my home is up on the mountain-side so it's completely dry. But the town, Margaretville, New York, looks like a disaster movie. Won't know what it's really like till I get up there this Friday night. Thank God my films are safe...
