Uh, you clearly misunderstood something Peter Jackson said, Graham. 48fps has no strobing. That's the whole point of using it for 3D.

When Jackson went back to 24fps, THEN he saw strobing and other effects that we normally don't notice because we have gotten used to those effects.

Also, I read a review where the reviewer said that he was so engrossed in the movie that he forgot he even had 3D glasses on.

I expect all kinds of mixed reviews in the days to come.

Well, that was your experience. I, on the other hand experienced no such ill effects.

3D simply does not bother me no matter how long I view it and for that I am thankful as I LOVE 3D!

My Friend who gets headaches at 24frame movies hates 3D is going to love this Mexican Soap look. Some times it is good to have the faded grainy look? Avatar, Star Wars, the Ten Commandments ,Gone With the Wind, Goldfinger, and Avengers did okay? I guess it is like Harryhausen and his jerky animation and now they have the clearer souless CGI?

I really do hope that on DVD or Blu-ray, they'll give the buyer the option of buying it either in 24fps or 48fps quality.

Well just got home from screening it tonight on 35mm all 9 reels of it, it had very soft focus and looked like a daytime soap-opera, but apart from that I had a full house and they all seemed to enjoy it [Big Grin] , I thought that the print would of been printed here in NZ like all the other LOTR titles, Kong etc, but it was done in the USA.

I don't think blu-ray can play back at 48fps, so we might be ok when it comes to it.

I just got back from seeing it in 24fps 4K digital 3D at a theatre that had 4 options to see it.

1 - 24fps digital
2 - 24fps IMAX 3D
3 - 24fps digital 3D
4 - 48fps digital 3D

After my wife and I finished watching the normal 3D version I wanted to check out the HFR version so we went over and sat in it for a bit...having just finished the movie our point of reference was very fresh... It has a very odd look to it, which reminded me of old video like the few Twilight Zones that were performed live and recorded to tape, or some of the UK TV shows from the 70's that I believe were on tape like Tomorrow People. I don't think it will catch on. The movie though I thought was fun enough and should keep all of the LOTRites happy....

Hey Dino I saw all the 4 versions you listed. And frankly I could not tell any difference? I did thing the 48fps had a little out of focus look at times . I ended up liking the plain 24fps no 3D version. Oh well back to the old drawing board. Personally I only liked Avatra and Avengers in 3D. And I really liked Friday the 13th in 3D and I saw it with the late Johnnny Cash in a little theatre in Hawaii. He was taking his grand son and I sat with him through the whole movie. We met at the out side of the movie house box office. He asked me if I ever saw it and I said no but I wanted to check it out. He invited me to seat with him.

I just saw this at the 48fps and 3d and I loved it. I heard reviews that were lukewarm about the content and the presentation but I thought it was first rate.
Can't wait for the 2nd installment!

Well he has another two features planned, giving that the book
is only about 300 pages long,it's going to be a long haul, a bit
like making a banquet out of a tin of beans.

I just caught the movie last night.

I agree with Hugh and others: Tolkien's book The Hobbit is a simple, straightforward story that one would think could be easily told in one film. For this adaptation, they have grafted in plot elements that I suppose might be borrowed from The Silmarillion or might be whole-cloth inventions of Peter Jackson and his screenwriters.

That said, I must also say I am very pleased with the look of the stereoscopic 3-D in this film. The Hobbit is very comfortable to view, but it's not as timid about "spending its parallax budget" as other films-- The Amazing Spider-Man being a prime example. In that latter film, many of the two shots and simple dialogue scenes looked about as 3-dimensional as your average coin. Not the case with The Hobbit.

I am also very enthused about the look of 48 fps, but I want to take a little while to process the experience before I put my thoughts into words.

I just saw it in IMAX 3D yesterday. Overall I enjoyed the movie but the motion blur was quite annoying. I believe this was the 24 fps IMAX version, I assume the 48 fps reduces motion blur. I don't think the 3D adds much to the movie, I think I would have enjoyed it more in 2D.

By the way, they had one of their old IMAX projectors in the lobby.
