Rule #1: Talk about the film club with everyone you know. When they try to change the subject, bring it back around to films and the potential of small gauge projection.

Rule #2: Talk about the film club online...constantly. See above and do this on a new Facebook page, a new blog, or sites like these.

and Rule #3: Do not stop talking about the film club. Once that train leaves the station, there's no looking back.

Hi Folks --

I'm thrilled to let you know that my film club, B.U.F.S., is on the rise. Our local arts and entertainment periodical has just interviewed me in regard to 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm film screenings I started doing in September 2011 for a featured article in next weeks paper.

I'll post a link here to their online edition when it comes out.

I mentioned how helpful Forum has been, guiding me in the right direction on anything from repairs to detailed descriptions of print quality. It's a small article but, I hope I mentioned Forum enough times during our conversation so that they will mention it.

So far, I'm pleased with all of the attention and responses the club has received. It's also thrilling to note that there is a resurgence in small gauge cinema with nods to film makers like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Michel Hazanavicius (recently) who are still keeping this amazing hobby alive with their current work.

Go ahead (if you have time) and start a club in your own home town to see where it may lead.

I've posted the rules above, now it's up to you to make a difference.

We had a very exciting and eager crowd last night for Steamboat Bill Jr. on Super 8! The article has not come out yet but, it seems like there are online entertainment sites that have taken our program schedule and made all of the films listed on our calendar "Top Picks" or have promoted the events beyond my expectations.

From regular scheduled films that brought in 3-10 people, the screening last night served 40 sitting people and left the room at standing room only, and there were many who stood to watch it in its entirety including myself! Needless to say I didn't expect quite so many people. I wonder what kind of turn out we'll have for next Sunday's screening of 'The Lost World' after the article comes out.

Stay tuned [Smile]

Nice read Gerald! And nice to see you!

I have the same 16mm projector you have, a Kodak Pageant. Nice machine.

Having a film club is a good idea...maybe I'll try it sometime...

Okay,

Here we are a year later and this film club is really taking shape. I've continued to have screenings every Sunday without any breaks. Last year we took three Sundays off but, this year I plan to have at least 52 screenings, half of those being silent films.

This morning I read a new article published last night regarding the Bay Area's inclusion as a host for a silent film revival. It was nice to read and sort of unexpected to be included with established groups and non-profits like the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum.

Here's a link to the article, which will help bring in people to see this Sunday's screening of Stuart Paton's adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916).

Bay Area Becoming Mecca for Silent Film

I encourage one and all with a desire for film history to start a film club, anywhere out there, to share your hidden treasures with the public and bask in their splendor.
