I have been mystified recently when replies on a thread contain the one single word BUMP . A search engine explained it is connected with Bumping, or To Bump.

It is used by members of an on-line Forum to bring a particular thread to the top of the list once again.

I would like to suggest to our Moderators that any new reply just containing this single word be deleted.

The purpose of this, and any Forum, is to exchange ideas and seek information from fellow members.

Of course you realize someone will eventually bump this thread.

A few years ago an IT guy at my job decided to introduce "NNTR" (no need to reply) to hold down e-mail space on the servers, and he added "NNTR" at the end of his e-mail.

-half the company replied with "great idea!"

Actually there are certain circumstances where I can see "bump" being used: for example in a sales or wanted category.

-not so much in regular conversation. If there is something new to add, then add something. Even "I'd like to discuss this again because..." is better.

Most of the time I've seen "bump" used (in other Forums) is to drag up some old Hornet's nest people had gotten tired of fighting about months before just to make trouble. That would not (and should not) fly here.

I appreciate Steve's point about a "Sale" or "Wanted" item which has not attracted any takers and the member wishes to draw attention to the post. In this case it would be much better to remind members that the item is still for sale or wanted by actually saying so.

It might even bring a response.

I agree: if it was me I'd copy into a new thread and forget about the old one. I just don't get too upset if someone else "bumps" a sales thread.

The day someone walks into my office and starts a conversation with "Bump!", I'll start to worry.

Steve
The person walking into your office could be Mr. Bump.

This banned word is getting a lot of use here.

Could also refer to Bump Keys.

BUMP [Big Grin]

Seriously though I have no problem with bumping. If members want to do that its fine, particularly on the sales/wants thread to highlight they are still looking for a particular title. Adding the word 'Bump' is no different than adding just 'Still looking'

...and not half as annoying as people removing whole posts once they've sold their item.

You're right Michael. I hate that when sellers re-edit the whole post and just write SOLD. When you look back at old posts you have no idea what was sold!

I agree with Michael there, as sometimes little bits of info get wiped too. As for the bumping bit, can't see the harm, folks trying
to sell bits & bobs sometimes get swamped, and lost, trying to put their gear back to the forefront doesn't do any harm.
