Following months of rumours and an intense week of speculation (especially on GallifreyBase, where the "missing episodes thread" reached nearly 7000 posts in 3 days), the BBC today confirmed that a large number of missing episodes have been recovered.

This years christmas special, set to air Dec 25th 2013 will be the 800th episode of the series. Out of these, 106 are currently missing. When the BBC stopped junking in 1978, this number was 152, and now, in 2013, it looks like it's going to be reduced once again, hopefully by a lot!

I am sooooo psyched about this, and really hope they found "Power of the Daleks".

Saved by film transfers following what your link says : "The BBC destroyed many of the sci-fi drama's original transmission tapes in the 1960s and 1970s. However, the majority of the episodes had been transferred on to film for foreign broadcasters. It is often these prints found in other countries that are the source of retrieved episodes." I am surprised that in a so conservative country the public television destroyed its own programms. However for its 50 th (if I remember well) anniversary, the BBC brodcasted during one week programms from the sixties, seventies and so on. What the French television did not although there is a special organism (INA) that records al the programms (so that they are supposed to have everything that was on air). There was a live programm I watched on Belgian television when I was a kid and all that remains from it is some super 8 footage taken from one of the parents of a child who took part of it.

Yup, the BBC made 16mm kinescopes of all episodes, seeing as many other television stations didn't have the neccessary equipment to use 2" tape, aswell as film being cheaper than tape, especially in black/white.

There has been a big rumour for some time about most of these episodes turning up in Africa and being freighted back to the UK. There has been so much misinformation....up until now. I am guessing that some stories have turned up but nothing like all 106 episodes.

According to the goblins on GallifreyBase, where I have been living for the past three days, 90 episodes have been found, and will be released in waves over the next 12 months.

"Marco Polo" has been semi-confirmed, but appearantly it required more restoration than the others, and therefore has yet to be announced. "Power of the Daleks" and "Evil of the Daleks" has also been strongly hinted at, and according to most third-generation-sources on the forum, there will be NO completely missing serials after they've all been restored, only odd episodes.

Just been watching BBC News and there on screen was a blue 16mm spool containing a "lost" Doctor Who.
"The Web of Fear" (1968) and "The Enemy of The World" (1967) have been found in a TV station in Nigeria.
They can be seen on iTunes and a DVD of one is available, the other will be issued early next year.

DVD will be issued in UK only for now. No word on a US release. Anyways Web Of Fear needs episode three animated. Thus the Feb release. Good news otherwise. I remember watching recons of these shows. Too bad Nick Courtney is not around to see it. He was a nice fellow.
