According to NBC news tonight there have been several near misses between airliners and drones at major US airports, you know those remote controlled helicopter things. Apparently there are idiots out there who like to fly these things up to 4,000ft in the traffic areas around airports. Its the same bunch of mentally deficient neanderthal's who like to blind pilots with laser beams. Needless to say, a drone hitting an airliner would have catastrophic results, easily taking out an engine or smashing a cockpit window.

This is a whole new technological frontier and something nobody has even begun to figure out just yet.

As far as I'm concerned, the FAA should register these, and they should operate only on assigned frequencies.

If they stray where they are illegal, the people on site should have the right to use their own transmitters to bring them in, or take them down. A hefty fine should follow.

-If they get too close: a duck gun and a sharp eye should do the job just fine.

The other side of the coin is I have this friend at work who is a decades long model aircraft fanatic.(-fixed wing and rotorcraft too)

-he's afraid if the drone situation gets nasty enough, he may find himself grounded.

Steve, my impression of the model aircraft community is that they are a very responsible group of people who take the whole hobby very seriously and would never do anything stupid that would endanger an airliner.

Indeed they are!

My only gripe with this guy is he tends to go on and on about his hobby the way (...wellll) we go on and on about ours!

"Tony...I'm glad you retrieved your Spruce Goose from the bottom of the lake, but I have this report I have to finish!"

The shame for him is he may wind up getting caught up in all this. Some of his planes are less "models" and more "small aircraft".

as a kid, I loved model rockets from Estes. They were a lot of fun to build and fly.

Estes made a model that actually had a small Super 8 camera in the cone. It would shoot a brief movie after the parachute was ejected filming the decent downward.

That particular model was one out of my price range.
