I just read that the new Star Trek show is supposed to be on a new internet CBS network thingy, and in order to watch the show, you'll have to pay and apparently, download it?

Am I correct in this?

I wonder if the person buying the right to see the TV show will also get, in the deal, annoying commercials, as if it was on regular network channels, or will it be commercial free (gee, if you're paying for it, you ought to see it commercial free).

If it's not commercial free, I wonder how advertisers are going to like having a show that the only people, seeing the show, are those who paid to see the show?

I'm really quite confused by all of this (a doddering 50 years old by January 7th), and it appears that this is something that they are trying out with a "hot property" ...

I think people will chaffe in general at having to pay to see a TV show that they have always been bale to watch for free. I think that this will backfire on them.

Your thoughts, ladies and gentlemen?

I think it will succeed in killing what may have been good shows in the long term by giving people a reason not to try it out or watch it again if they didn't like it the first time.

For example Star Trek the Next Generation had a great run, but a pretty horrific first season.

Would it had survived into the better Season 2 if people had to pay to see the episodes that came before they hit their stride?

-you'd feel pretty stung after paying to watch it and having it fall flat.

"Fool me once, shame on you..."

One of our favorite shows is "The Big Bang Theory" (...reminds me of work, actually!). We only started to watch it three seasons in because my sister recommended it. What chance did it have if you throw a barrier up to ever trying it?

(PS: it's "your".) [Big Grin]

Here in the U.K. everything was free until Sky appeared with it's priced bundles. But a lot of folk (myself included) felt that as we were paying a compulsory licence fee why should we pay more? And, fortunately, Freeview and Freesat came on the scene providing us with around 60 channels. Freeview is now included in all the decent t.v.'s so paying for anything is less important. An awful lot of folk seem to agree. And, in the end, most of the paid for stuff eventually trickles down. There will always be folk who can't wait and a lot more who can.

When you reach the age of 75 you can apply for a free TV licence in the UK.

Maurice you might get a free tv licence at 75 but you still have to pay for your packages like Sky & Virgin etc. Now Amazon and Netflix are getting in on the act. Just a way to milk silly punters who think they are missing something.

On another topic did you know some cinema chains are charging double the normal admission charges to let you watch new Star Wars movie. Poor greed and laughter at the idiots prepared to pay for that.

Fox claims DVD and BluRay sales for "The Simpsons" have been poor and stopped releasing them. Not true. Fox is trying to get subscriptions for "Simpsons World" on the internet so we can continue paying to watch episodes forever (count me out).

My late fathers words came into being as he predicted digital TV would equate to the broadcasters dictating when, where and if you could view something up against owning a disc of it to view where and when you wanted to. Sorry to see broadcasting go up this avenue. [Roll Eyes]

We will arrive at the point where whenever you want to see or hear a "film" or a song you'll have to "buy a ticket"!

-I suppose it's the answer to the age old problem of piracy, but for every measure there's a countermeasure, and instead of bootlegging the recordings they'll start hacking the servers!
