Congratulations Film Tech on reaching out to 5000 members!
It wasn't so long ago numbers were dwindling and the membership was below 4000.

Now with over 1000 new members since just over two years ago, it proves the interest in this hobby is still forever on the increase in this resurgence period.

Let's hope many more than currently do from the 5000, make their voices heard to keep this forum lively and vibrant with plenty of daily topics surrounding our fantastic hobby that is simply FILM! [Smile]

that is good, BUT, over a thousand in two years?
How many people coming on here are actually in the hobby or even have any interest in the hobby, there's usually more to it than that. Beware what you put on and what info you give out. Dont forget real names are used on here.

Before anyone moans about me going on, i am not, im simply pointing this out. You all know what goes on with on-line fraud these days.Be safe. You have your full names on here and the town you live in.It doesnt take too much imagination to ask where 1000 people interested in cine have suddenly come from.

If it was an issue of identity theft, I'd worry more about the ones that don't sign up.

I actually had someone I know in three dimensional, non-film related real life ask me for projector help because he had trouble, Googled for help and found me here. ("It says you are some kind of...'Film Guy!'")

-but good for us having 5000 people of any kind interested enough to sign up! 30+ years after the VCR came out there shouldn't be five people interested in what we do if you go by the conventional wisdom!

Maybe we should drop in over here and let these guys know we survive!

Moderation in all things, Alan!

Pay the rent and feed the kiddies first, then see what's left over...

I see this hobby from the viewpoint of an old tinkerer in classic cars. An old co-worker did up a '69 Chevelle and he dropped $10,000 on the engine! (-and then took out the oil pan courtesy of a misplaced cinder block...Ouch!)

Paid $6000 for a paint job...parked it outside a bar...two drunken dudes wound up having a fist fight all down one side! (Belt buckles, beer bottles and biker boots...oh the humanity!)

Every time he fixed it he activated his car phone, every time it got trashed he had to have it turned off again...

(Did I mention he was still living with Mom and Dad at the time?)

-at least with this hobby I can afford a life too!

Great to know we've reached 5000 but I must admit that a number of names come up regularly making me think that a lot of the 5000 have long since departed. The number of replies over a period suggests that more look than post. Having said that, I have noted a number of new folk joining which is all to the good.

We get a lot of people who are interested in video transfer, and that's OK because sometimes they stay.

We probably get a lot of former film collectors who just want to browse for old times sake. That's fine.

-we had a "former" guy show up at CineSea last year for old times' sake. He had a great time and then went home with a projector and a couple of films. By now he may be "former-former". ("ex-former"? "de-former"? "transformer"?)

I'm sure we get a lot of lurkers too, because a very long time ago I was one of 'em!

It's true to say, that now, in this day and age, many people joining these forums or even remaining within them, probably will never buy a cine film or cine projector ever again.

Though it would of course be very very nice to experience many new collectors becoming interested in such machinery and film, we have to be realistic in understanding that to many, a projector in the traditional sense of the word,is little more than a tool to achieve an end means by virtue of a transfer of an old movie film.

Many others will fully appreciate the thrill associated with recreating a traditional style big screen atmosphere within the home, but will of course do so by using modern technology at a fraction of the cost and effort to carry out the job.

More disheartening to me, is always to hear from seasoned collectors of film and cine equipment who then somehow begin waxing lyrical of the benefits of digital technology to achieve the same end. As though this is some new found alternative.
Oh really???

Whatever the reality of the situation, the fact remains, 5000 individuals have at least some affiliation or interest in real film and its importance of existence well before there was ever any alternative.

Long may this continue, and I live in hope that the more people that get to handle real film in whatever capacity, the more that grow to have the fascination and fondness for it that all of us dedicated film users and lovers now feel.

It gets into our bones, blood and even our DNA does this film melarchy and once bitten, never ever will the bug leave any of us for good

Although the numbers are sort of impressive I am sure there are quite a few that over the years have simply, and for whatever reason have moved on.

It would be great to hear once again from some of those folk from years ago, even if they have given up with film just to say hello [Smile]

The good thing here and in particular General Yak, is that its not just about "film" [Roll Eyes] but other things as well. It would be great if more photos were posted say in the "Your today in Pictures" topic. Did you spend the weekend climbing Mt Everest? or simply pottering around in the garden pruning roses. Did your favorite English football team lose again, and have a photo of being carted away by the police as a result [Big Grin] ...anything at all [Wink]

That's what Facebook was invented for Graham. This is an 8mm forum after all. [Wink]

Women gossip, we do film, Ouch!
Sorry if that is sexist, but very very true here in Old Blighty! [Big Grin]

Your first two paragraphs, I agree with you entirely though Graham. [Smile]

"Your day in pictures" is a wonderful thing: it's just another thread, nobody even had to set anything up, but it gives people a chance to be creative and lets the rest of us enjoy the results.

We've been at this too long to be strangers to each other. We're people with lives apart from film (-at least I hope!), and it makes it more interesting when it's OK to talk about it.

I swear if I went to a convention and people refused to talk about anything but film at dinner, the next time I wouldn't even take a room.

-get there early, buy some films, get out!

I don't go with excessive non film related talk on film forums myself Steve, but of course, I respect your views and also everyone else's. [Wink]

For what it's worth, as a fairly new member, I came here looking for some advice on projector repair and transfer techniques and came away with a new appreciation for film as a medium.

Instead of just transferring old movies, I ended up buying a Super 8 camera and creating more 8 mm movies. The new interest has extended beyond 8mm into 35mm stills. A neighbor was giving away an old canon SLR and I snapped it up.

In the process I've learned more about photography in the last couple of months than I have in my previous 50 years. I bought a slide scanner from craigslist from a guy who turned out to be an accomplished sailing photographer, - another passion of mine.

At the same time, working with film has also made me further appreciate what the digital age has brought us. Ultimately the end output of anything I do will likely be digital. And the sad truth is that getting film processed is not as cheap and easy as it used to be. Even though film has enjoyed something of a renaissance, I'm not sure that situation will improve very much if at all.

I ended up buying my Super 8 film from Pro8mm and I'll get the processed film back on Tuesday according to FedEx tracking. I'm really excited about see how it turned out. I hope they do good work because I feel as if I've been gouged on shipping costs. I sent two cartridges to them via first class mail and it cost me less than $4.00 for both. I mailed them last Saturday and they arrived on Monday evening. Pretty good !

Pro8mm is charging $15.00 to return the processed film and it will have taken almost a week by the time it gets here. I'm not sure when FexEx started using mules. [Wink]

I admit that I've been spoiled in the age of Amazon Prime, but when the good old USPS can deliver in 3 days for $4.00, I'm not sure what Pro8mm/FedEx's problem is.

Oh, and as far as collecting 8mm films goes, a few months ago I would have seen that as a hobby for the slightly eccentric. Today I see it as a pastime... for the slightly eccentric. But it's important to know that I consider "slightly eccentric" to be a compliment. [Smile]
