There are some actors that just play a great drunk. Two come to my mind right away, Walter Mathau and Lee Marvin, (who literally made his drunk comwboy a specialty for almost ten years of films, from "Cat Ballou" to "The Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday".
I always thought good ole frumpy faced Walter was the best part of "Earthquake", as his character is perpetually plastered throughout, as everyone else is running around with their head cut off! The film-makers even found more ways to use his character in the film. I remember fondly that as two main actors are walking through a scene in the foreground, (in a underground car parking place/garage), you see, as the camera pans, Walter drunkenly dancing on a car in the background to the peoples happy amusement. He was just great!!!
