It was a good transaction so from that standpoint there's nothing unusual about the experience but since I haven't done it in awhile, there were some noteworthy things for me.

  • eBay tries to make things easy, which usually drives up the cost
  • I chose the global shipping option, and had no idea what that meant for international purchasers
  • I sold my item for $35 and netted just over $30. There were fees for the sale on Ebay, the Shipping, and Paypal.
  • The buyer paid 5.19 for shipping, but Ebay charged me $5.95. eBay says that paying for shipping through them saves you money, but I haven't confirmed that.
  • If the item wouldn't have sold, eBay would have re-listed it twice automatically, - no action required on my part
What I mean by Ebay making things easy but inflating the costs mostly revolves around shipping. Since my item was relatively common, I had the option of letting eBay fill in a bunch of stuff for me, - including the shipping weight. That weight was over twice what was necessary, and I packed it well. In that case, I made the adjustment to keep the costs down.
But I did choose the global shipping option for international buyers. I have no idea how that's reflected in what someone from Canada (for example) would pay. Nowhere is that shown to me as the seller. But I have heard that shipping via that option is expensive, though eBay makes it really easy for the seller.
These aren't complaints, just observations.

i've never had an ebay issue in over 20 years....
As a buyer,
If you have good feedback... pay immediately... do not neg feedback people who ship properly(ie. don't hold others ransom for shipping mistakes)... you will get your delivery safely in my experience. ALWAYS, use PAYPAL via credit-card and you will NEVER be out any money because any problems are reversible, you will have a good run like I have...
As a seller,
If you have good feedback...sell EXACTLY what you advertise(ie. explain ever blemish even if overkill)...ship immediately ONLY to confirmed addresses via PALPAL..do NOT use global shipping and ship with researched prices(ie. figure it out ahead of time, no excuses, i've done it for every single transaction, it is easy...do not hold people ransom on their feedback because you are unsure of what they will give you...then you might have a good run like i have...

I personally really like ebay. I have no issue paying someone for a good service if it does what it should...I use it all the time..but like i say, some people using this service are clueless;ie. do NOT buy and sell under the above criteria and thus many many issue ensue...in my experience.

Glad it worked out for you Tom...Have any Super 8 little rascal sound shorts you want to sell me that i may not have? [Smile]
I pay immediately and have 100% feedback and have never had to NEG anyone yet- he hee....
@Tom P- Thank-you for choosing NOT using global shipping! We appreciate it greatly!
ps: Global Shipping is a good idea for larger item purchases, say, over 100$, then it can be meaningful imo.

Over the years I bought many 16mm films from the US. Often the postage to the UK was more than the cost of the film, but this was something that I accepted.

But no more since the eBay Global Shipping was introduced. The final price to pay now only comes up after I have agreed to purchase, there appears to be no way to find out the final cost in advance.

The global shipping program with e bay, has indeed killed off altogether, any chance whatsoever of shopping outside Europe now for our films, here in the UK.

Unless I can do a private deal with sellers outside Europe to waiver the ridiculous import duty that gets instantly added onto the total value of the goods INCLUDING shipping costs, then I don't bother any more.

It is simply uneconomically viable nowadays.

Yeah, that "global shipping" thing should really be called "Global Rip-off", or, "let's see how much more we can milk from the buyer option"!

I still buy from overseas, not as much these days, but you still can get a good deal on overseas shipping. I'll usually ask the seller if I can pay such and such amount, as I'm pretty knowledgeable about overseas shipping.

For instance, I recently bought "JAWS" Universal 8 2X400ft, on a 600ft reel. The seller was originally wanting 23.00 pounds for shipping overseas, and I had just bought the "Bug's BUnny MYstery show" 600ft a week earlier, and had paid 10.00 pounds, so asked if i could send it by the same shipping amount. he loooked into it and found a 12 pound shipping, which i was glad to get, and it arrived quickly.

Now, grantd, not every seller is as oblidging, but as a general rule, most sellers, (myself included), will try to make the shipping as good as possible.

... but, to take for granted that the quote that ebay gives for shipping is accurate is a quick slide downhill!

I wonder if a "shipping tips" sticky in the "for sale" forums describing what people paid for shipping between various places and what method/carrier they used would be useful.

Mathew: Sorry, no Little Rascals. Actually, no 8mm at all aside from home movies.
