So normally, when I put my 4 and 7 year old (who share a room) to bed, I read a story to each of them, then we do "talk time". Tonight, I felt like doing something different, and suggested telling them a story from my head.

King Onesie (our cat), summoned Sir Luca (4 yrs old) and Sir Vincent (7 yrs old), his brave knights. He told them there was a dragon in the woods who had died, and slept on a pile of treasure. The King said he would give the Knights half of the treasure if they would bring it back to the King. The Knights set out, without any weapons. Along the way, they found some garbage cans and made shields out of the lids. They made swords out of sticks. Pretty soon, they met some goblins, who they defeated with their sticks, and took the goblin swords. Soon after, the two Knights met up with a couple of trolls, bigger than a house! After defeating the trolls, the Knights took their shields.

Then, the two Knights found the dragon and treasure - except, the dragon wasn't dead after all, just sleeping. They tried to kill the dragon with their swords, but the swords broke (both kids are standing up in bed by this time, silently using their various weapons). The two Knights then killed the dragon by using their shields as frisbees, and took the treasure back to the kingdom. When the King demanded half, the Knights explained that since the dragon wasn't dead and they had to dispatch it too, the Knights would keep all of the treasure. The King became outraged, and
yelled for his army to attack the two knights. And then......

"To be continued..."

And I have one Knight standing on the top bunk, one Knight standing on the bottom bunk. Finally, the 4 yr old says "AND!?!"

I then explained what a cliffhanger is, and said (to much protest) that we would continue the story tomorrow night!

What you didn't tell the kids is you have to come up with the next part!

[Smile]

Well, now you have a whole day to the think of the next part.

My kids are teens now but for a brief period I was also telling them original stories instead of just reading. Eventually I found the creative pressure to be just too much, even after the tales had pretty much devolved into rehashings of old Star Trek episodes.

Thats great to have the imagination to follow this through, sadly with me I find it a struggle to keep awake when reading bedtime stories to my grandkids without rolling over falling zzzzzz. I tried to make it short like...Once upon a time...the end [Big Grin] but they wont wear that [Roll Eyes] [Smile]

Man, this brings me back!

When my son was very little, he'd walk up to an adult with a book and say "READ!".

"Please" and "Thank You" came some time later that same year!

Here I am a fairly entry-level Dad (in certain respects I still am! It's a moving target!) I have my 18-24 month old kid propped up on the couch and I zip open my old tripod screen in front of him the very first time.

-scared the bejesus out of him!

(He's 14 now: apparently not too scarred!)

Just thought I would provide an amusing (to me, anyway) update. The story has continued, and previous posters were dead on - it's hard to come up with fresh stuff! There are a few days in between chapters now, and yes, these two medieval knights are now on a spaceship....yet still chased by the same witches.

Tonight, at the "to be continued" portion of the story, my 4 year old said "I don't like when you get to the continued part". My 7 year old the chimed in "Yeah, how come you always stop at the most exciting part?"!
