About twenty houses in Belgium, got, because of a technical incident 400 volts instead of 230. The consequences are terrible, one of the Inside of house is completely ruined. Time to remember that electricity is dangerous. This extract of the news (in French but the pictures speak for themselves). Intersting to note that the journalists wrote "400 volts instead of 220 volts", as for many people, 220 volts in the norm although it is no longer true ; 230 volts has been provided for years, now.

My French isn’t good enough to order pastry without a dictionary, but I think they are saying there was 400V on Neutral. That would be pretty nasty since Neutral should be pretty close to Zero and that’s the line the fuse isn’t on!

"The border of the neutral driver roasted injecting 400 volts in the district instead of 230 volts." (meanwhile, they corrected and changed 220 volts in 230 volts, maybe they read this forum ;-)

Obviously a three-wire three-phase low voltage system (415volts). These usually have a fourth wire which is the neutral. This allows three separate single phase supplies to be provided at a constant voltage of 230.

This arrangement is commonly used for supplying groups of domestic properties each of which are single phase loads. (230).

As Dominique has reported, it seems that one of the phases somehow got connected to the neutral, thus supplying some households with around 400 volts instead of their normal 230.

Rather frightening if anybody in a household was near any item which was connected and switched on and working.

Ouch. Her kitchen looks like it pretty nearly burned down. Don't need to understand French to appreciate that!
