May 18th. Mark your calendars. New 70mm prints struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. No digital fidgeting here. The goal here is to present it much the way it was seen in 1968. Check theaters in your area. You may have to travel a bit but I'm confident it will be well worth it.

If only someone out here in NZ could screen a 70mm print on a large screen that would be really something, sadly not the case, however look forward to hear how the screening of the 70mm print went, as film projection is so rare these days...it certainly would be a treat [Cool]

Unfortunately someone on a DVD forum said as it was a new but unrestored print they should just show the 4K digital version http://www.zetaminor.com/roobarb/showthread.php?52356-2001-A-Space-Odyssey-on-4K-UHD.
Thankfully several people put him right on the advantages of the film being shown.

A 4k digital presentation defeats the purpose. The goal here is to show it the way it was seen in 1968. A 70mm print will have its own aesthetic. Sadly, too many people think that gorgeous screen images didn't exist before high definition digital.

Yes, I said the digital (and probably the 70mm on a normal screen) will have none of the impact of the 1 film Cinerama presentations in 1968. I saw it at the Casino Cinerama in London on a school trip, the physics teacher said that if the arts side could go to the theatre we could go to see a science based film.

In the last 10 days I ran off my Super 8 Scope Kempski print and enjoyed it thoroughly still not the same as 70 mm far from it but I got to see this masterpiece the way it was meant to be seen

Brian Fretwell, I was agreeing with you and just elaborating a bit for the benefit of the uninformed. I haven't read anything regarding this re-release being shown in Cinerama (as was the case in its original 1 strip 70mm Cinerama roadshow presentation). It would be great but only a very small handful of theaters worldwide actually have a Cinerama screen.

Well... I guess I can watch my 3 slightly faded, scratched, scope 16mm reels - basically the 2nd half of the movie. *Sigh* - always looking out for a good 8/16 print of it. And hell yes - i'll be going to see it, I saw the last 70mm presentation in London, I think around 15 years ago?

I watched it in the late 80‘s in Berlin at the ROYAL PALAST. It was in the Programme right after Disney’s THE BLACK HOLE in 70mm.
And although I was too young to understand its glory I still remember this feeling of the enormous image on the screen.
Today the ROYAL PALAST is history and an Electronic Store. But the memory remains...

Pan, would love to, unhappily much to do at work and time out for the CINESEA show in Wildwood this month with 35mm (not as big ratio to 70, but still a joy) - Cheers, Shorty
