In the mid 50s my parents bought a TV set, a Sobell in a fine wooden cabinet with just the one channel, the BBC. In those days TV closed down in the afternoons and opened up again around teatime.
The evening shows were something like a cinema programme, and I can still remember an American comedy programme initially called "You'll Never Get Rich" but later changed to "The Phil Silvers Show."
I am now very delighted to see these fine shows about the scheming Sergeant Bilko are on Forces TV which is available on most servers although to receive in Freeview you will need a Freeview HD TV or tuner.
It seems they are showing the programmes in date order, programme number 2 is today.
There were 143 half hour programmes which ran from 1955 to 1959.

Love this old series, it is also available on DVD, but the latest release is every single episode. I bought it for my Brother for his birthday. i would love to get one or two on 16mm. We missed out on one a few months ago. Thanks for the link Dominique.
