Having received a 16mm feature on four 1600ft blue Tuscan spools without cans or cartons, I was unable to buy suitable cans owing to a personal problem from a potential seller.

So I have purchased two bespoke boxes from Packing Boxes Co. UK., each to hold 2 x 1600ft spools. I used their "step by step" builder to order item number 0201 (standard box design) with 3mm thick single wall cardboard.

The figures for length, width and height relate to the finished outside dimensions, so it is important to allow for the cardboard thicknesses and a bit of leeway.

The dimensions I used were L=365mm, W=365mm, H=63mm.

The boxes arrived flat packed so it was necessary to provide some method of securing the bottom folds. Sticky tape was my first idea, but replaced by using PVA glue bought from a local Hobbycraft shop. (Pritt Craft PVA Glue Tube - 135ml).

The finished boxes resemble, somewhat, the boxes used by American film/TV distributors. I consider that any larger boxes should use their 7mm thickness options.

Maurice - that was good use of initiative, as the boxes issue never goes away. I expect it's very difficult nowadays to find a manufacturer who will offer boxes that open at the ends, although I obtained a large quantity made for single 1600' and 2000' spools by EFS, something like 12 years ago.

The best new cardboard boxes I ever got were manufactured for Tony Hutchinson decades ago. They were made using thick (non-corrugated) card and some could accommodate 2 or 3 spools for features. They compared favourably with ones that used to be used by film libraries, and they only opened at one end so couldn't be flat packed. I expect Tony must have been eager to sell the surplus, considering how much room they were occupying in his home!

Thank you, Adrian, for your kind comments.
Whilst my new boxes are not in the same class as those wonderful ones from Tony, they, at least, are reasonably acceptable, although, as I said, perhaps the use of the 7mm card would be a better choice.
