You hear this a lot: “What if EVERY DAY was Christmas day?” What if every day was a day of peace and goodwill? What if every day was a day of generosity and kindness?

I’ve been giving it some thought and I think it might actually be a really bad idea!

The first day of every day being Christmas would be wonderful! -just a normal Christmas day: a day of joy and togetherness, a step back from the craziness of life. Families would be gathered around dinner tables and Bing Crosby would be on the radio. Newly engaged couples would ride through snowy fields behind matched horses: all would be well!

-but beginning on the second day, things would start to go sharply downhill. People would say to their loved ones: ”What did you get me for Christmas?” and the only answer could be “I gave you your present yesterday and the stores are all closed!”. The mood would sour considerably!

-on the third day “You didn’t get me anything last Christmas either!” would begin and people would start passing each other on the stairs with nothing but a dirty look.

Four days later the refrigerators would be empty of Eggnog, Turkey and Fruitcake. The Supermarkets would have been closed for a whole week: this is where starvation and rioting would begin.

People would grow tired of Christmas music and the 60 different remakes of “A Christmas Carol”. The airwaves would soon be filled with Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger to reflect the rapidly evolving Christmas Spirit. It wouldn't stay that way for long. The utilities would be operating on skeleton crews: the power and communication grids would collapse within 10 days.

A month into Eternal Christmas, all of civilization would be reduced to bands of filthy, naked, desperate people dressed only in Santa hats and warmed by burning a dwindling supply of Christmas trees.

Western Civilization will have been destroyed by one of its foundational events! Its final history would be recorded on the backs of the last Christmas cards.

So, as much as I love Christmas, I don’t think every day being Christmas is worth it!

So Merry Christmas, but just…today!

Now,…about New Year’s Eve…!

Graham! I see this mood coming roughly day nine!

I mean: what would the guy who wrote “The Twelve Days of Christmas” do when the number grew to sixty five or seventy nine?

“On the 85th day of Christmas my true love gave to me: eighty five..(um…?)…eighty five bottles of beer on the wall! eighty five bottles of beer!”

I can imagine a ship standing offshore: the First Mate says “Captain? Won’t we be putting in?”, the Captain says “No son: It’s still Christmas there!”
