CENTER CHANNEL DEAD OR NOT WORKING

YAMAHA DOLBY PROCESSOR

MODEL DSP E-580

ISSUE DETECTED TROUBLE SHOOTED AND REPAIRED

start

For those of you who have this model. I am hoping this information may help you.

Center channel has 3 modes of which it can operate. If incorrectly in the wrong mode, it will appear as if center channel speaker is not working. And after checking everything (else) to no avail, you start to think to replace the unit.

Well, do not forget this simple thing to check. As it can perhaps be the key to the problem.

Use the remote control to access center channel mode.

Make certain it is in normal or wide depending on the type of center speaker that is connected. Use normal mode if the speaker is small size but can handle dialogue well. Use wide mode if the speaker is of higher quality similar to or the same as the left and right speakers.

When you check this mode before changing anything if it says PHANTOM mode this is the reason center speaker is not working. This mode assumes there is no center speaker at the TV or screen – and therefore sends the center audio equally to left and right speakers.

Return to normal or wide then run the hiss test pattern to be certain things are better.

Do not forget this hidden little gem of an issue. It may seem like something is wrong but actually the processor will have been doing what it was told to do.

This information is for only model dsp e-580 and as always, check your manual for what to do if your model is different. Do not assume pro-logic on one model will be the same on all models.

end

I've encountered a "phantom" center channel mode on other equipment as well, so Chip, your admonition is a good one for more than your Yamaha unit.
