I am looking for some help plaese [Smile]
I'm trying to work out how the Elmo serial numbers worked.
Most GS machines have a number in the 82-83xxxx range. I have seen some xenon machines with 88xxxx numbers.
What I would like is for as many people as possible to list their Elmo models with the serial numbers. GS's and ST1200, 600 etc welcome. What are the serial numbers on the xenons and even the Pcom GS's. I am starting to think that they used a serial number similar to car manufacuters and their VIN numbers. Ie 82-83xxxx = std GS and 88xxxx =xenon, 30xxxx = ST1200HD and so on. My ST1200HD is a 30xxxx number and my GS's are all in the 82xxxx range.
Lets have as many numbers as possible to see if a patern emerges.
Thanks in advance, Kev. [Smile]

Kev,
I have two GS1200'S:

Version 1- forward facing loop restorer, black plastic roller at film input (at red arrow). Serial No. 826949

Version 3- rear facing loop restorer, with film path folded back below gate, metal roller at input with microswitch linkage, amplifier knobs are still dots (not lines). Serial No. 827737

Hi Paul,
"amplifier knobs are still dots (not lines)" Do you think someone has swapped the knobs at some time in it's life. I have never seen a ver 3 with dots on the knobs but I suppose there is a first for everything. Interesting that Elmo made those major cahnges in less than 800 machines. Must have a look at my numbers. With enough numbers we may be able to see where the changes took place.
More numbers please from all you Elmo owners. [Smile]

Kev.

Kev,
Both my machines were bought off eBay so I have no idea of their history. I can say that the vers 3 model is in mint condition, and does'nt look like any work has ever been done on it. Possibly Elmo had some surplus knobs with dots which they decided to use up before using the ones with lines.

Just had a look at those numbers and I'm wondering whether it would be fair to say that the entire run of GS 1200s ran to about 12,000 units?

What do you think?

Oh my God.. I have 6 GS!! [Eek!]
Ok Ok friends.. one of these is out of order (I have it for spare parts); an other one is disassembled (and I don't find the time to reassemble it); and an other is for one of my friends (it's waiting - the projector not the friend - for a total check, and a two blade shutter)...
Eh ehehe... was someone thinking I'm crazy... [Big Grin]

a last information: the younger GS I saw has this serial number: 831395. On the main motor there is 1984 (!); the motors for the arms are different from the others I saw; the recplay heads are like heads I have for spare. I have received this information few minutes ago from one of my friends who bought that GS from me.

Ugo, I also have a spare GS Head Block and the erase head is black instead of white. Is that like your spare one?
12,000 units? They were all hand built and dont forget they were still selling ST1200's, 600's Sc18's etc etc. I think these numbers mean more than we think which is why I am interested in them. I suspect they refer to yr, week and day etc. I cant belive they made 12,000 units by hand along with all the other machines. May be wrong though.

Kev.

Hi Kev.
yes, it is! I suppose these heads are stronger than the original, with a long life. Two or three months ago some heads like these were on Ebay.de. The seller wrote the heads came from the last stock made for the GS, and he also wrote those were able to work for 500h. instead 250h of the original. What do think?
Bye

What have you noticed about the differences between the various machines that you have owned?
I noticed that the Halogen Gs I use to own, was a little bit louder, more prone to hum, and I did have to use the loop restorer often.
Then I use to own a Playback only model Xenon. This was a very nice machine that was fairly quiet, no hum, but the heads on this machine were so so. The last Xenon I had which could play and record, had the most wear, but also had the best sound of all the 3 machines I owned. It was also the quietest.

Kev, it's an ST1200D, not HD. Yes, only a five digit #. I'm still looking for a good HD with mag/optical sound. BTW, I added my ST800 # to the earlier post [Smile]

Posted by Kevin Faulkner (Member # 6) on February 05, 2004, 05:01 PM:

Thanks for that Joe. Yes I suppose the "D" would be a much earlier number sorry but I missed the lack of a "H".
Alan, As far as i know the heads didnt change on the GS's but I may be wrong. What I can tell you is that the Xenon version has a different amp. I think its 30W per channel. It doesnt surprise me that you can hear some diffs on the xenon compared to the std GS's. I am in the middle of buying a Xenon at the moment and cant wait to get my hands on it. It even has its original Box and all its accessories.
Looks like I will be selling one or two of my Std GS's to help pay for it. Anyone want a GS multi vlotage model (110 - 240V ver 3) [Wink]

Serial numbers of my machines:

823478 v1.5 GS1200
829023 v3.0 GS1200
829136 v3.0 GS1200

880525 Xenon GS1200 The one I'm not buying.
881033 Xenon GS1200 The one I am buying.

306018 ST1200HD Mag only.

I would be interested in seeing the versions if pos. Perhaps you guys could amend your posts adding that info.

Version 1, GS has dots on Vol and tone controls with black plastic input roller.
Version 2, Has dots again but has a silver input roller which controls a microswitch.
Version 3, Has lines on the controls instead of dots and also has a rear pointing looprestore lever. Film path second loop goes backward under the lens.

I have seen what I call a version 1.5. Its identical to the ver1 but does have a takup motor control board with only 2 control pots on it. The version 2 also has the control board but with 3 pots. Unfortunatley you have to remove the back to check this one out. The board is mounted on the rewind motor. No board and it's a ver 1.

Thanks again guys. I wonder who has the latest GS then? [Smile]

Kev.

Kevin, could you explain that again: Where are the black plastic or silver input rollers and where are the micro switches to be found? Which technical function do the micro switches have?
I noticed that older models do not have a micro switch over the threading part (which can be modified by Wittner) . For what does this switch serve?
Best regards

Henry,

I believe Kevin is referring to the small roller at the front of the GS where you feed in the film. On later models Elmo changed it to a stainless steel one from a black plastic. The roller has the ability to move backwards as tension from the feed arm is felt by the film passing under it. It operates a lever which connects to a microswitch situated in the loop former. You can't see it without taking the loop former off but you can hear it click in and out if you press the steel roller in with your finger. I think the idea was to alter the torque to take account of the tension in the film but I can't remember if that is in the take up reel or the feed reel.

Rgds

Tony

Correct Mr Millman. You were quite obviously taking it all in at our mine cine fest. [Wink] The torque is adjusted on the feed arm but only in reverse projection. Elmo found that the differance between a 50 ft and 1200ft spool was too great.
Keep the numbers coming guy's.

My GS1200 has the serial number 824913 and as mentioned in a previous post I bought it from an auction house in Dudley along with several other projectors. It has PAT stickers on it from the 70's and am wondering if it didnt belong to Derann, as it has a modification to the side panel . The addition of a large screw knob, no idea what its for, obviously for some external fitment as it doesnt affect the mechanics or electrics.
Any light please welcome.

Ian the numbers might as well be. Think I'll try using them for my next Lotto. If I bought a ticket on Wednesday morning for Tuesday's don't think I even win that.

This all started in January 2004 in an attempt to try to work out how the Elmo serial numbers worked.
Many, many, members listed their models and serial numbers, but other than that, it all fizzled out without any final ideas being put forward.

Sometimes serial numbers mean something, a common one is beginning in two digits for the year and then the next two being the week of the year. "1252" would be the last week of 2012.

-sometimes they just start with some arbitrary number and keep adding one to it...

A company I worked for told a new assembler to make a hundred name plates with serial numbers starting at 120. After she was finished with 100 plates all with "120" on them, they figured out she wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer and within a week she was...seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Actually don’t really agree with the std version III identification being outlined as all having black lined volume knobs. I have a vsIII with a late number but with dots on the knobs also with three pots, rear loop etc so unless the wrong knobs were put on when new this is as it came out of the box when purchased.

Could anyone use the informations given in this thread ?

Wellll...

I guess since we failed to reach any conclusion about the meaning of the serial numbers, they aren't really "information" at all, just "data".

If you could look at a serial number and tell that it was assembled 3rd November 1979 by a left handed woman who grew up in Hokkaido, now that's "information"!

The word "contribution" would indeed have been more appropriate [Smile]

My serial number is 824848 I think. The later 8's also look like a 6. It was bought in 1979 from Cine Sound in Northampton. Still magic to use.
