I'm glad to see that trailers have got back to the good old fashion style of advertising the film these day's and gone are those crappy self indulgent actor/ director "look at me" junk of the late 80's onward. I recently bought the last samurai trl and like all the older stuff it brilliantly cuts the entire film down in two minutes with very few flashes of captions left for the end, Hollywood seemed to go through a stage of showing the actors and makers having a laugh on set and forgeting the film content, oddley enough some trailers are cut down better than those poor digests we were talking about not so long ago,
Whos got the rarest trailer on 8mm then?

True Grit trailer was always one I was after then I got the choice of 3 within a month.

Remeber the size of the list of trailers availible through Thunderbird films of usa? They were imense, were are they all now?
Got 2 400ft Star Trek cutdowns from them, both quite good editions, and both have front and tail original music endings.

I'd imagine that 'Revenge...' although now sought after now, would be one of the more popular Jeff releases, whilst many of their trailers soon became almost impossible to find. E.g. it took me about 30 years to get their 'Dragonslayer' trailer and I'm still looking for 'Welcome To My Nightmare'.

There was another US company that released a very small number of individual trailers around the early or mid 80s. They were possibly orientated towards rock music as the only prints I've seen from them are the trailers to 'The Kids Are Alright' (The Who) and 'The Song Remains the Same' (Led Zeppelin). I'd imagine that these are amongst the rarest trailers around.

One I have that I'd suspect is also pretty rare is the trailer to the obscure 1992 British animated film 'Freddie as F.R.O.7.'. This was released by CEC soon afterwards. More recently, I expect some of the final Derann trailer releases have quickly become rare. I think the very last was 'Die Hard 4.0' (2007) and as by then the lab was incapable of quickly producing prints to capitalise on a modern film's release, Derann hardly seemed to promote it, knowing it was the end of the line. I wouldn't be surprised if maybe just one batch of possibly 20 were printed.

If non-commecial prints are included, I have a small number of trailers that I got printed in the mid 1980s via a very small operation in London that was actually equipped to print and record Super 8 from 35mm masters! In two or three cases, my copy was the only one produced, so I have unique prints of the trailers to 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' and Hammer's 1979 'The Lady Vanishes', the latter in scope. Quality is OK, a little soft but perfectly watchable. The price was quite reasonable, maybe about 50% more than buying a trailer sold by Derann at the time.

Hugh - I was fortunate enough to get the 'Evil of Frankenstein' trailer years ago, but I don't know if the colour is still OK. Do you know if that's the only trailer Derann released on Std 8 in colour? And do you know if anyone other than Derann released Std 8 trailers, as I think all the ones I've ever seen are Derann prints?

Not sure how rare or who released it, but I have the special sneak-preview trailer of "The Empire Strikes Back". I believe its the one Fox released when they re-released Star Wars in 1979 or 80. It was part of the advertising campaign too. Scope/low fade.

Also, I have a trailer to "Frogs" (1972), one of my favorite "B" movies.

Hi Adrian, the colour on your "Evil of Frankenstein" should be
okay as it will be printed on reversal, the print & colour on mine
is lovely.They also did "Spectre of Edgar Allen Poe" in colour
which I forgot to mention in my above post,along with the trl to
"Scrooge" when Derann had a hire print in their catalogue.
I can't think of any other colour trls in std 8, but if there's one
thing I've learned Adrian, it's that someone will produce one.
As for other distributors,I can't bring any to mind,I know that
Perry's did the trl to Phantom plus an edited 50' reel of the
unmasking scene,I was wondering if Barry Wiles did any for his
"Sweeney Todd" & "Crimes at the Dark House",there was some
weird and wonderful stuff in those early days.That's when Derann's sales list was two sides of an A4 sheet of paper,Xeroxed in type face.I can't think of any from Powell, I
would think you're right and DFS were probably the only one
printing trailers.

James - that's a surprise to hear of a 'Frogs' trailer. Any idea who released it? And was it sold individually or could yours have (e.g.) been cut from a Thunderbird trailer reel?

Hi Adrian-

I bought the "Frogs" trailer as used. It came on a 50 foot reel. Judging by the quality, it could have been a Thunderbird release.

Its a good trailer, and has the famous "deleted scene" where the woman falls into quicksand.
