I've been getting some great quality dvds for $2.99-$4.99 from Hong Kong/China. Spot on pics and sound. I notice some of the big titles(like Around the World in 80 days ) are missing titles-just the way they burn them I guess. Anyrate, they are a lot cheaper than discs sold locally.

Trevor

Yes they are cheaper. Most of these are bootleg.
You can find a lot of these on ebay.

I just bought the Starwars set knowing this has yet to be released on DVD I was curious to see what was inside.
The packaging was not bad and convincing. I discovered they had made a copy of the laser disc collection so the image quality was not up to DVD standards but it was not bad if viewing on a small tv.

When I saw that post title Trev I thought you might be affecting your eyesight!!! Ahem, Asian DVds and all that.
I nearly bought the star wars dvd!!! too but I`m going to wait till september.
I see Greystoke is coming out on DVd R1 in June, can`t wait.
best Mark.
By the way if you are video projecting stateside if you have a dvd player can do region 2 many of the titles from the UK are far sharper being pal and look better on video projectors that hapilly show pal anyway, you should see the R2 of Zulu, awesome.

I just purchased a VCD of "Love Actually" because I couldn't wait for the video release. Well....interestingly enough it had chinese subtitles and it had been edited!
The whole subplot with the 2 people who were doubles for a porno film was gone. Every scene that they were in...gone!
I had no idea that they were censoring the US movies that make their way there.

My experience has not been quite so good with a copy of the Million POund Note which has the worst sound track I have ever heard. Picture quality is fair though. Watch out for it on ebay!!

I bought an Asian Disney disc, the quality of the picture and soundtrack excellent, [Smile] I also bought another of Lost Horizon, soundtrack as good as any pal dvd, but picture quality not up to standard, as the same as Tony's, copied from a laserdisc. [Frown]

Mark, I don't understand why pal would be any sharper than NTSC? [Confused]

PAL has an extra 100 lines Chris. This doesn't have quite such a marked effect on DVD's due to them being binary (or digital to use the buzz word), but laser discs are a different matter. PAL laser discs were generally superior to NTSC discs but there were always exceptions.

Hi thats right John, but I think there is quite a diference between R1 and 2 smetimes and I think many R2`s are a lot sharper, having seen example`s of odd newish films on both, its more obvious on a cracking DVd player with a good TV or video projector.
Of course a lot comes down to the master, a lot of the Anchor bay stuff on R2 is transcoded from the R1 NTSC master instead of a proper Pal version and its very noticeable.
With the prices for many Dvd`s often now between £5-£8 when on offer at say play.com I generaly just buy a proper release. Just bought full season 2 and also 3 of the simpsons for the nippers on R2 from play for 15.99 delivered each, 22 eps on one 23 on the other, can`t say fairer than that.
Also just got on R1 the pilot episode of Kung Fu + the first series 15 eps for £18 delivered and its bloody great.
Don`t get me wrong you still can`t beat film, even just the handling of it but DVd is very handy.
best Mark.

Thanks for the explanation guy's.
Just for information, i would check out the prices on play with dvd.co.uk as they are very competitive now with play and are more often cheaper than play.

Chris. [Smile] [Wink]

Tony,I had a look at the Million Pound Note tonight-halfway through it sounds as if someone is desperately editing the soundtrack! Rather similar to the sound tracks on some of my Walton 4x400fters!Picture is spot on though. Ah well,it was a $2.99 dvd!Trev
Oh Mark,I couldn't find a f1.0 lens for my Elmo so I had my cataracts removed...............did the trick!
