I am getting very angry about people who keep trying to compare super 8 with electronic media such as video and DVD. [Mad]

So let’s get one thing straight to all those people who are so misguided. Being a collector of super 8 films and the hardware that you need to show these films should have nothing to do, or in no way should be compared to video. Collecting films old and new is what the hobby is about, owning your favourite film or cut down of your favourite film on celluloid and finding, repairing and playing with all the equipment necessary to do this is what the hobby is, or should be about.
Searching for the near as perfect condition you can find, completing a collection of MGM digests or the complete 1st addition Laurel and Hardy prints on the Walton label, (that’s my goal) seeing your collection there on the bookcase, showing of to people who didn’t realise that the hobby existed. Keeping the projectors running by the supreme efforts of fellow enthusiasts such as Tom Photiou, Ugo Grassi, Kev Faulkner, and not forgetting dealers such as Derann, Classic, Paul Foster, Ian of Perry’s and many others who make the effort to keep going as dealers in such a small hobby so that we and others can continue to enjoy collecting.
This forum is a testament to all the things that people love about the hobby, where else in film collecting can you find such enthusiasm, the BFCC has given collectors a chance to watch films that they may not be able to otherwise see and hear, and to show what can be, or in some cases can not be achieved on 8mm, and to give enthusiasts a meeting place twice a year, and there’s much more than that to it.
The hobby has more to it than, how good is quality on super 8 compared to the DVD projected version, It’s about having fun, meeting people who enjoy the same thing as you do and trying to make the best of your hobby.
Now those people who want to slag of our hobby and think we should throw away our projectors and films just haven’t got a clue what it is all about, if the price of video projectors hit rock bottom, it would still not discourage me from collecting. If they want to sit at home with a couple of bookcases full of plastic discs and a square motionless box to show them on, then that is there choice not mine, and I would never try a tell them that there wasting there time collecting them. I will keep my old out of date, old fashion celluloid and super 8 projector and be proud that I am possible only one of a very few in Bedfordshire that has a film collection on real FILM.

In my humble opinion, everyone needs to take a "chill pill" as it relates to the time spent on this "film vs. video" nonsense. Frankly, I'm thankful that formats with SUPERIOR sound quality exist, such as DVD, so as to mitigate the generally cruddy sound quality of super 8 releases. Just think -- if it weren't for the DVD et al format, we film collectors wouldn't be able to revel in the glory of sync pulse, re-recording, etc.

Our film hobby is certainly unique and that's what makes it fun. However, while I will collect film as long as possible (and as long as these aging projectors hold out), let's not get so myopic as it relates to other formats, some of which (gasp!) actually have superior elements (such as sound quality) -- whether we want to admit it or not.

Just my two cents.

I'm in total agreement with Chris. I too have made similar posts. It's like skiers and snowmobilers. There is this invisible line they never cross. LPs and CDs too. Most real collectors are purists. [Razz]

Yep. I'm with Chris on this one, it's like comparing a steam engine with a diesel. Ok, so the diesel is faster and more efficient and requires less manpower to keep it going but the Steam Engine is just pure, throbbing beauty [Smile]
