Hi all,
I ordered a film from Indie 8 online and they do not take credit cards. Since I am located here in the states I cant seem to find anywhere that I can get an international money order in British pounds. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Alan,

About five years ago, I used the Citi bank near me, and they were able make the transaction for an International Money Order. You will need to go there during regular business hours.

It's also possible that, (I believe) Barclays bank may make the transaction, but
I have never used them.

Last resorts are JFK airport and Triple AAA.

Call before running anywhere.

Citibank is your best bet.

Best,
Mike

Will he not take US$? Even travellers cheques are easy to cash in the UK and the exchange rate is fairly stable on small amounts? How much are we talking about ? If it is not a lot then you could post the cash.

Paypal? Is that not an option? Can he accept UK bank to bank payments? If so you could send me a paypal and I could send him the payment- Doug M will probably confirm I am a hardened criminal!

Barclays should be able to help

Dear Alan,

I don't know why it is hard for you to get an IMO, as most U.S. banks offer tis service, but I will take a direct bank transfer, but I will have to add an extra £7 as that's what they charge me for the transfer, so if you email me I will give you my bank details, and we can go from there.

All The Best,

Barry,
Independent 8.

Thanks everyone for the comments and the help.
Barry, I would send you a wire transfer but my bank wants to charge me $50 to do so. And my bank also does not make international money orders. My AAA Credit union will give me british pounds with a minimum of $300. Sigh.
So...Tony, is it possible for me to Paypal you the money plus any additional fees that you would need? The amount is 47pounds and I would add on some for the Paypal fees and postage. Let me know. If you can that would be great! I would be eternally grateful as I sit and watch "The Rose" on Super 8. Gee... that title is so hard to find these days, im glad that Barry had a spare one around. [Smile] (Just a joke all...its for Xanadu!)

What about Western Union transfer.

I think Barry is padding the envelope with three copies of The Rose. One on each side and one cut in half for the ends.

I think they use a lot of copies around nuclear power stations as well. It really the modern equivalent of asbestos.

No dust but it you watch it you will wish you were dead. [Wink]

Alan,

I do not have an account with Citibank. I walked in, and they completed the
International Money Order for me. It's very easy. I'm sure that there are Citibanks in your area. If I live on Long Island, I'm sure that you can find one near you as well. The surcharge was $5.00 which is not alot of money, and there was not a minimum.

Thanks! Ill check out Citibank and see what happens. I was told they wouldn't do it for British Pounds via telephone. Did you do it for British Pounds?

Alan,

Citibank performed the transaction, only if you walked into the bank,
which they then asked for identification. So, I presented my drivers
license.
I asked for an International Money order in British Sterling and then they
drafted the Money Order accordingly.

Ask what their current fee is for drafting the I.M.O.

Hope this helps.

Weigh all of the options which are available to you, so that you can make the payment for the films which you need to receive.

Mike

The best way to send money for a payment of any kind is through MoneyGram, you will find MoneyGram Agents in most places like Travel Agents, and local stores, which means that you can send a MoneyGram late at night or outside normal bank type hours becuase some stores that are MoneyGram Agents like your local supermarket stay open late.

If you do a Google search using "MoneyGram" go onto thier web-site and pump in your zip code, and it will come back with the names of all the stores in your area, telephone numbers, and addresses where you can get a MoneyGram.

Its easy to arrange, all you do is go into the shop, tell them you want to send a MoneyGram to the UK in Pounds sterling, you pay for it in Dollars, and the reciepiant in the UK can pick his money up in cash Pounds sterling from any MoneyGram outlet in the UK, which includes most main post offices, and a lot of travel agents. I've used this service many times when buying films in the US, and it's fast. The seller or the buyer can pick up their money in cash and in their own curancy 15 minutes after it has been sent, and the other good thing about this service is,if you are expecting a MoneyGram from another country and you are not in your home town when it is sent, you can pick up your cash from any MoneyGram Agent by showing proof of identity.

Hi Tony,
Everything is pretty much semi-sorted. I guess I'll just bring some Sterling with me when I come to the BFCC in October! [Smile]
Thanks for all the help from this side of the pond and the other side as well.

Alan,

OK, but no problem for me to help you out in future purchases- don't pay your hard earned cash to the banks.

So you are over for October? Have you heard about the MMP Tour Bus (Milman,Meltzer,Peckham) stopping at Deranns and Grandpa Ian's shed, err sorry temp controlled film storage.

Tony

Alan, if you are coming over make sure you let us know your travel plans. We'll have to organize a gathering and 8mm entertainment for you whilst you're here besides the BFCC.

Unless I lose my job...(crossing fingers here) I am definitely coming to the BFCC and London!
I would love to hitch a ride on the MMP Tour Bus!
So I will be arriving Friday Evening, BFCC Saturday and then leaving on Sunday evening late/Monday morning via train to see the rest of Europe. Does that work for everyone? [Smile]
I am so excited. The home of Benny Hill, Werner and Hogg, Dr. Who and the Daleks, the Beatles....I know I missed a lot here...but its late !

Alan,

Great- just smuggle out Doug in your suitcase!

I think the October event to be the better of the two that I have attended though it is hard to decide. Perhaps because of the time of year or that it was my first one.

If we can get an idea as to who is planning a trip over from the states we can be a bit more organised than when poor old Doug came over the pond.

Hurray! Another MMP bus trip to the cine sites of the UK. Be nice if we could include Classic Home Cinema but I guess it's just that bit to far up the wrong end of the country [Frown] .

We'll have to give Uncle Ian the wink and ask him to make arrangements with the security company that guard his vast, climate controlled cine storage facility in west London, be nice to have a rumage around there again. And hopefully a cup of coffee with the guys @ Derann. Godzilla here we come [Wink] .

So who else will be coming?

Mike [Cool]

Unorganized? Tony, everything was absolutely perfect! This time though, bring a trailer so you and Mike don't have to hold back on your purchases! So many Tom & Jerrys.......

Are the other lovely film places open on Sunday or should I take Monday off -stay in England and leave on Tuesday? Any ideas?

Alan,

As I was reading your schedule, I thought right away that you need at least one more day on either end. If you stick with arriving Friday evening and leaving Monday morning it might be difficult to catch the MMP Tour Bus. Derann is 125 miles from London and even with Tony's blinding speed that's a 5 hour round trip. Plus collectors have been known to get lost for weeks in Ian's Cine Complex. Let's see, I entered the shed on a Tuesday......

How can you go to England and do nothing but go to film events??? Good grief -- at least spend a few days in london - check out some museums, catch a west end show, and eat Indian food !!

A man must have his priorities Steven! [Smile]
Besides, I have France and Italy, Prague, and Rome for these! England....ahhh, Super 8 heaven!
