And another one...
There has been discussion on this forum before on the Eumig S940. Some people here seem to like that machine a lot (as well as the S938). The same people warned for earlier models. I seem to remember everything below 930. What about the S932? Does it compare with the machines in the 938 and 940 range, or should it also be avoided?

Hi Rob,
I have the Eumig S938 Stereo and it is my favourite projector even though I own a couple of Elmo GS1200'S. The stereo sound quality from this machine is simply superb, much better than the GS1200, and the film steadiness is flawless, and the machine is also very quiet. The same can be said of the S926 stereo projector, but the thing that ruins the 926 for me is that terrible co-axial reel arrangement and absence of the feed sprocket. It really is awful, very hard on the film, and as noisy as hell. Rewind is even worse, dont even try!!. I definately do NOT recommend any of the 900 Eumigs with the co-ax reels. I do not know if the 932 is coax reels or not, but if it is coax reels stay away from it. Look at the front of the projector, if there is a fold-up reel arm then the machine has the normal two sprocket feed system and will be no threat to your films. If you can find a good 938, you will be delighted with it, particularly if you put in a really high quality f1.0 lens.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply. I think it was you who was raving about the S938 before. I did some web research and found a 'Virtual Eumig Museum'. Lots of info on Eumig stuff:
Virtual Eumig Museum

I found pictures and short descriptions on the S932/4/6 there:
S932/S934/S936

Apparently not the strange coaxial reel arrangement, but not in the quality ballpark of the S938/S940 either.

Cheers,

- Rob

Hi Rob,
I have a Eumig S932 Supersound and am very pleased with it indeed. I find that it performs as good as the later models on the projection side. With regards to sound recording, I cannot say how it performs as I have yet to undertake this challenge. What puts me off is the visual lack of recording features, the S932 only has a record button and a trick dial. If you look at the S938 it looks to have a good sound mixing system. The S932 has the two sprocket feed system and is a very forgiving machine when you get the odd bad splice running through the gate, it will also accept a spool size up to 800ft, very handy indeed. How the S938 would compare against a GS–1200 I cannot say, having never owned a GS-1200
It would be unfair to comment. It would however be fair to say that Eumig released the S938 Stereo as their runner against the Elmo GS-1200. In conclusion, if you want a nice reliable projector then go for the S932 Supersound. If high-end performance is what you are after then the S938 Stereo would be your best bet. Hope this helps.

Hi Rob,
If you are interested, there is a nice little Eumig S936 Duoplay on Ebay.

Here's my comparison between Eumig S938 and Elmo GS1200, in a nutshell, and based on actual testing:

Eumig S938 ELMO GS1200

Spool Capacity 800ft 1200ft

Lamp 12v 150watt 24v 200watt

Stereo sound yes yes

pulse-synch no yes

Sound quality best

Ease of recording best

Film Steadiness best

Picture Brightness best

Splice Handling best

Operating noise quietest

Sound head wear longest life

Weight 18lbs 36lbs

Reliability best

As you can see, Eumig did a remarkable job on the 938/940, producing a projector which surpasses the GS1200 in terms of stereo sound quality, ease of recording, quietness of operation, film steadiness, and splice handling. The GS1200 surpasses the Eumig in terms of picture brightness, spool capacity, and having pulse-sync capability. Ivan Watson called the Eumig designer's "The Wizard's of Vienna" , such was their design flare and expertise in projector design. Even 25 years later, you cannot look at a Eumig projector without unbound admiration for this once great company and its fantastic engineering team. Eumig admirer's can worship at the altar of the Eumig Museum web site.

Hi Paul.
Not a bad comparison and I’m glad to see the Eumig put up a good fight. This is good news for film collectors as it proves that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy this wonderful hobby. I have seen the S938 Stereo on Ebay a few times fetching around £50 - £70. Elmo GS-1200 from £600 - £1000. I dare say that the GS supporters may disagree, but the Eumig is an excellent priced machine for good performance. All I need now is to find someone who has as much Eumig knowledge as Kevin Faulkner has on Elmos.
