Although I am having trouble with one projector currently, this will be a general question.

My question:

How much noise should an ST1200 D/HD make when running film.

I have 3 pairs of these machines. No two sound the same. With or without film, the noises are strikingly different between all 6 units.

There is one pair of HD's with optical. There is one with minimal noise, and the second less noisy but minimum noise as well.

There is one pair of HD's magnetic only. One is very quiet, the other, very noisy. Both seem to run fine.

There is a pair of 1200D units with optical. They are not real noisy, but make more noise so I would say would be slightly above minimum.

And to classify minimum noise, I would say it would be the first 1200 HD with optical. This amount of noise would have to be defined as, not to loud or quiet, but acceptable, and/or seems to be running fine. In other words, more noise could or would mean a problem might be in the near future.

I would be interested in any comments.

My avice is to stop worrying and watch the films being projected on your collection.None of my Elmos sound the same, nor for that matter other projectors in my collection, but they all run well. [Smile]
If it isnt broken, dont fix it!
Show me two automobiles of identical manufacture and you will have similar discrepencies.

Chip, to an extent I agree with Barry. The only additional observation is to ask does the noise sound as if it shouldn't be there? You can usually know when something just don't sound right and needs looking at. If everything is lubed up and belts are in good nick I would not worry.

Like Barry, none of my projectors is exactly like another but I do know if something is not quite right.

They just have character!

First, I wasn't worrying at all. Second, I posted the thought just to see what the answers would be. I agree with everything you said. Thank you for your replies.

The only things i come up with is this,
If you have older and newer models it could be that you have one with no rubber on the outside of the shutter,(earlier model) which may be a little noisier, the later models with a rubber circumfrence rubber ran much quieter.
Also on the claw you have a claw cam, with age thse wear and do make louder machine wear, however this is not to say it requires attention, it just means there is a little bit more wear within the said elmo. My brother had his claw cam replaced as part of a service and you would not belive how much quieter this made the projector.
Have to say the same though that we have three of these 1200's and they all do sound different. [Wink]
hope this helps.

As an old hunter I say,sit a bit up wind of your ST1200 and avoid the chatter, clatter and flutter!

Well by golly Trevor nails the problem to a tree.

Reading his comments, I realized I've been sitting "down wind" of the machine, so it must be me making all that noise.

Gee, this post is starting to get silly, isn't it? LOL
