As an animator myself I'm particularly interested in getting hold of cartoons/animated films on S8, there are so many things it'd be great to watch on film. There's certainly no shortage of classic Di$ney stuff at least, though I'm no fan of their recent work!

I'm particularly interested in Japanese animation (AKA Anime or often incorrectly referred to as 'Manga' here in the UK.) A while back I won on ebay a 2-reel episode of the 70's series 'Captain Harlock' which I got very cheap because noone except me has such an obscure combination of interests... and it's in Italian! It seems that my best bet is this kind of thing, as imported + re-dubbed anime TV series have long been popular in europe.

I wonder if anyone knows of any sites with info about super-8 collecting in Japan? I can only imagine that in the 70's and 80's there must have been at least some anime released on super-8. Would be interesting to get some idea what's out there! I'm hoping that at least extracts of some of the best anime movies (e.g. Akira, anything by Studio Ghibli) exist somewhere, but I suppose it depends on the state of super-8 releases in Japan.

I visited last year but didn't think to look for super-8 stuff! Just as well; I bought way too much junk as it was!

Can't remember which company released the S8 "Final Flight of the Osiris"... anyway, it's a shame they didn't choose one of the other 'Animatrix' shorts, I thought that was pretty much the worst one! Never mind...

Anyway, enough rambling from me, please let me know if you have any info/thoughts on the above!

I have worked in animation for a while (Ninja Turtles for IDDH and Robocop for Marvel) so I understand your interest...
My wife is crazy about Totoro and our house is full of plush Totoro toys (even the very big one sold at Ghibli).
I travel regularly to Japan but never ever saw a single 'local' reel of super 8 there. Saw a shop full of Elmo Projectors of all sorts in Kyoto, though, with a bunch of cutdowns from Universal and Marketing but, that was it...
You should check Ebay France from time to time, as 200ft reels of "Goldorak" (Cold Drake/UFO Robot Grendizer) are often being auctionned.
Another good source would be to check the website of one of your members in Germany, Andreas, click here .

The Animatrix short was released by Derann, and the people who run the company read this forum.

alot of japanese animation on 8mm were published in Spain, olé.

Maya the Bee, 120 meter (400 footers) and 60 m (200 footers)
Color spanish sound( Aries films, Barcelona)

Vicky the Viking, some 180 m (600 feet versions), only original title was edited away.

I went to the Ghibli museum, amazing place. Best of all they had various special museum-only shorts, showing on film. There's a cinema, (when I went it was showing the short Totoro sequel with many Catbusses!) and also around the museum itself are various looping screenings and amazing heath-robinson devices with film going round all over the place. And the tickets contain a couple of 35mm frames from their features.

If Derran could release Ghibli shorts, that'd be something!

You may well want to look out for two self-contained 400' reels that Derann released around the late 70s from 'Space Cruiser Yamato'. They occasionally appear on lists, etc. The quality was pretty good and the colour still looks fine on my copies. One was titled 'Sace Cruiser', the other 'Space Cruiser vs The Gorgons'.

Tim, Ghibli Museum is wonderful. I went there two years ago and saw a different short at the cinema (story of a puppy). My better half went back last year or so to shoot a documentary to be included in a future collector editon of the "Spirited Away" DVD and she saw the Totoro/Catbus short you're talking about.

I doubt Ghibli will ever let go of the rights to create super 8 shorts. They're not the easiest persons to negociate with. But, then again, Tokuma, their publishing company, is in business with Disney to distribute the films outside of Japan. Since Derann have such good relationships with Disney, one can only hope...

I'm seeing "Howl's Castle" next wednesday. Can't wait.

Hello, Tim

Here in Italy several S/8 firms released prints of "Ufo Robot Grendizer" (locally known as "Atlas Ufo Robot"), Captain Harlock, Jeeg Robot and Mazinger Z. A.V.O. Film, based in Milan, releasd episodes of all four, often full-length TV episode with minor abridgments, each cut-down into three 200 footer parts. Quality is variable: somtimes they are OK, but more often than not, there's some light fade to red, dirrty masters and/or excess contrast; also the soundtrack is rather inconsistent quality wise. Other labels involved were "Techno Film", "Ersa" and "Cineriduzione Ariete".

I'd gladly trade one of my 200 footers of Grendizer with and English speaking version of the same character, maybe with start or end credits song. Interested? Let me know. Ciao!

I forgot to mention the Rome based firm "Sil.Ma" (not affiliated with the projector manfacturer): they released at least two theatrical films of Grendizer, which appeared in Italy only, because they consist in 4-5 TV episodes joint together.

How popular were these characters (especially Grendizer) in U.K.?

The Harlock episode I have is AVO release, on 2 200' reels... I love their logo, really 70's! The quality is OK, nice vivid colours still... tho alas my friend's evil projector chewed the beginning a bit when I first got it.

Not at all! Even I didn't know of Grendizer until I started looking for anime S8! Most of the anime series popular in Europe in the 70's/80s were and are pretty much unknown here (apart from the odd anime fan!)... instead we had similar stuff to the US (Battle of the Planets, Speed Racer etc) and also some great French/Japanese co-productions such as Mysterious Cities of Gold and Ulysses 31... I've no idea if anything of those last 2 made it onto S8, but would love to get them if so!!

Anime's been very much maligned and misunderstood here in the UK for decades now! People are just starting to get it now that things like the Ghibli movies are finally avaliable...

Is "The Battle Of Planet" featured with 5 bird-like outfitted heroes (Gatchman?!) If so in Italy we had them.

My favourite USA-Japan serial was "Star Blazers"; but if you're interested in Cap. Harlock, you may end up discovering that some characters of the former are also present in latter, for example the robot and the doctor. Nova, Derek Wildstar and the captain of the "Space Cruiser Yamato" (in Italy his name was Avatar) have the same faces of characters in the anime "Danguard" a giant, more geometrically shaped than Grendizer, giant robot.

Let me know if you are interested in further your knowledge in Grendizer.
