Hey, I love to share good news!! I just aquired, (for only twenty bucks!!) two Standard 8mm features : The Headless Horsemen, (Will Rogers, 1924) and "The Thief of Bagdad" (Douglas Fairbanks 1925 ... all seven reels, giggle!) What I didn't expect, was that they are the "soundtrack" versions, no doubt having an orchestral score. Can anybody give me any news on these? I know the Headless Horsemen is Blackhawk films and the Bagdad is a Niles print, (I really didn't know Niles released any Standard 8mm titles), but would anybody have any additional info on these?

Also, silly as it may sound, can anyone give me a good recommendation for a good Standard 8mm sound projector? I now have 5 features in Standard 8mm sound as well as many cartoons and short subjects in Standard 8mm sound, but never bothered to get a projector for them. Now that I have a good sized collection developing of these, it's time to invest in one!

Jan is 100% there! Eumig 810D, or the 810D Lux, if you can find one. Mine is the 810D and I have no issues with it at all.

I would have liked the Lux version, but couldn't find one. I'm sure you'd be happy with either, though the Lux is just that bit better.

Hey Jan, I tink your into 16mm and though this isn'y the forum for it, I have a question. I just bought from a guy, (who, I think, didn't know know just what he had) A Bell and Howell 70 DL "Filmo" 16mm camera, in it's original leather case, with not onlythe windup camera, but also every lense, (Elgeet 13mm F;15 wide angle F lense, Bell and Howell Telate 6 inch F/4.5 lense) and even the vial of te origianl camera oil. It's in immaculate condition and I was wanting to find out it's worth.

Do you know anything about them, and if so, d you now someone who knows about these old cameras? I'd say it's at least late forties early fifties.

The Eumig 810d's are very nice and that's what I use exclusively for standard 8. they never run super 8 at all. Also, another nice dual machine is the Eumig 824D.... The 810 seems more common on Ebay and sells usually for a reasonble price.

Thanks for the info, I'll be looking out for the 810. I have an ancient (mint condition) Eumig P8, (with the "sound looping thingy on the back, for reel to reel tape accompanyment), that's of course, standard 8mm, but it's in need of repair, and doesn't play sound anyhow.

I may get a lot of boos and hisses when I ask this, but what about those Kodak ektasound moviedecks? They play sound standard 8mm? Okay, I'll be honest, I just think they're cute.

I hate the Kodak Ektasound projectors, they don't even have sprockets to pull the film in, it's done by the claw. And they only run super-8 film anyhow (or is that ruin?) [Razz]

As for your 16mm (camera) question: I have no clue, and why didn't you just send me a PM about it? [Big Grin]

I was lazy, forgive me. Actually, I just saw one of these on the ebay going for 80.00 dollars, with a lot cheaper lenses on it as well, so that makes me go Hmmm.

Getting back to the Standard 8mm films, I was nicely suprised by the quality of "The Thief of Bagdad". Niles prints are majorly "Hit and Miss" in quality, and this eems to be one of they're "Hits".

I am still confused by the fact that this is a Standard 8mm Niles release. I always thought that Niles films were a relatively late-comer on the Super 8 scene. Does anybody know or have a list of other standard 8mm releases by Niles?

Can't answer that, but you're right about the hit-and-miss quality of Niles Films prints. I bought two identical Niles prints of Hoppity Goes To Town ... well, they're not that identical at all (other than both being faded to red, that is) - one was fuzzy and had poor focus... the other one is razor-sharp and full of detail. Bad news is, I paid twice for the bad print what I paid for the good print, and I re-sold the bad one for only $30 or so. Ouch. [Frown]

I hear you, Jan. I had a Niles print of "Of Human Bondage" a classic Bette Davis film, and the focus was so marginal as to not be there, with a terribly wash-outed picture. I was so dis-appoined, while these standard 8mm prints of "Thief of Bagdad" and another print, "The Black Pirate" (Both Douglas Fairbanks movies) are quite good. It still seems to make me wonder if the better processing happened in standard 8mm. Except for Derrann , the original Disneys and a few others, I have ran into more God-awful super 8's than I've ever ran into bad standard 8mm.
