Just got back from 10 days in the UK, during which I was able to take in the Tadley 'Big Screen Time' convention run by Geoff Wheeler. Well I eventually found the place with the help of my GPS and a frantic phone call to Keith Wilton, who told me to look for the Atomic Energy Research plant! Once there, I found the venue to be quite small compared with the BFCC which I attended last year. But it was a very friendly group and the enthusiasm for all things cine was well in evidence. In addition to meeting Geoff and his wife, I also had the pleasure of meeting Tony from Buckingham films, Harry Sullivan, MC Bob Nichols, and Grahame Newnham who runs that great 9.5mm web site. Dave Locke was very busy running the Super 8 scope show on a GS1200 Xenon, and he also presented a series of DVD Scope extracts on a Panasonic 700. The super 8 scope films looked very good on the 20 ft screen. Included was a long extract from the newly released 'Master and Commander', 'Matrix reloaded', and 'Goldeneye' and the quality of picture and sound on all these was exceptional. I did not stay to see all of the DVD presentation, but what I saw confirmed that projected DVD from the Panny 700, even on a 20ft screen, was very close to theatrical quality in terms of resolution and brightness, and of course the dolby sound was superb. There were quite a few dealers, including CHC and Buckingham films, and I purchased a belt for my Pathe Baby from Wharton Parfitt who had a lot of 9.5mm goodies on display. Tony at Buckingham films gave me a tour of the Buckingham 9.5mm projector which looks very nice indeed. I would have loved to have purchased one!
All in all, a most enjoyable little convention which I would highly recommend to anyone who can find their way to get to it!
