Further to one of our other correspondents,I have just picked up a Eumig MarkS Std8 sound projector that actually runs at 24fps.It has been stored (badly)for at least twenty years as far as I can make out.It took quite a few minutes to coak it in to life by judicious use of silicone lubricant.Once the lamp warmed it through, just like my poor old knees when they warm up,it picked up beautifully!
It ran sweetly for almost three hours without missing a beat.Picture steadiness was really very good as was the illumination once I had re-centered the lamp via the two very good levers at the base of the lamp.It has the 12v100w halogen fitted and its nice and 'white'.
The only thing to suffer was the control knob disintegrated but what the hell, all I did was remove the fancy surround to gain access to the rotating control cam and, with use of a small pair of pliers, can rotate it to its functions without problem.
I do not have many sound films at all,I prefer to collect the silents, but at least now I can be on the lookout for Std8 sound bargains.
This is the third Eumig I have,I have two other P8s.One the standard one and the other is the Phonomatic with built in tape synchroniser. And yes,I have an open reel tape deck to go with it too! Both of these P8s are in mint condition, one of them almost unused. Both two P8s use the same lamp as the MarkS so thats a bonus. Hi Barry,
My first 8mm projector was a Eumig P8. What a great little projector that was, so neat and compact and a breakthrough design in its time, with brightness equal to many of the 500 watt machines.
I soon got the phonomatic sync attachment, and was off dubbing commentary and music using a Phillips reel-to-reel tape recorder.
On one film I put my Eumig C8 camera on the rail tracks at Cardiff station and had the train run over it (with the station master anxiously looking on!- try doing that today and see the reaction it would get!) I added the sound effect of the train by spinning a ball bearing in a tin can. All great fun 50 years ago!

Barry,

I once had a problem with the control knob on a Eumig 822 Sonomatic.

The problem with my unit is that I noticed that the Control Knob Shaft had a very small crack style fracture, which would not enable it to turn the shaft on inside of the machine.

I took a small piece of copper tubing and shaped it into a press fitting around the outside diameter of the control shaft and epoxy glued it in place. Thus the control knob support will not split when turning the knob to the forward position. The knob can still be removed, it just has the support of a ring around it to keep the pressure firm when turning the control knob.

I also have one of those darling, (and very well built) P8's, the cadillac of Standard 8's back then. I'm still searching for my sound standard 8mm projector buy!

The nice thing about those old projecotrs, (like old cars before computer systems) is that you can use any number of things to make them run, without ordering off for spare parts. Todays Hi-tech super 8's really do confuse me, not really being a hi-tech brained guy.

Lotsa fun though!
