Are you speaking of the reels the new films come mounted on? The new features I've gotten from them come mounted on those reels, and they've always been horribly bent and misshapen, to the point that I fear the print will be damaged. I always get new Bonum or Gepes to spool the prints onto.

Yes I've had the same problem Kurt, new features from Derann arriving on horribly warped black spools. I'm not sure if its the fault of the spools or if it's something to do with Derann winding the prints too tightly on the spools and then the print shrinks up during the transit time to the states. Another possibility , particularly as we both live in hot summer climates, is that the films have been exposed to very hot temperatures somewhere in the shipping chain. Whatever the cause I do the same thing as you, immediately wind them onto Bonum spools. As far as I am concerned those black spools are crap!

I got a feature length used Derann "Titfield Thunderbolt" last week, and I noticed on reel one there was a little jump in the picture every couple of seconds. I looked at the reel and found that there were casting lines inside the reel that "twanged" the film twice a revolution. I dumped the reel, but the picture didn't completely smooth out. I wonder if many playings like this caused the sprocket holes to wear to an elongated shape!

It's more than tolerable, but kind of a shame!

You can get Gepes at B&H Photo, which is local for us.

Not cheap, but they work very nicely. (well, still cheaper than films!)

Alan I get my Bonum's from the Widescreen Centre in London. They are not cheap, but if you have a brand new $500.00 feature you want to put it on really good spools, and the Bonum's are the very best. They come with a very nice plastic library case and dehumidifier capsules. You can snap the cases together to make an integral case for a complete feature. Then make your own label on the computer and you have a very nice presentation of your film.
I've had the same problem as Steve with those black Derann spools nicking the edge of the film. These really are terrible spools all round- warps, burrs, and that horrible self threading hub which never seems to grab the film. I throw them away as soon as I get the film onto some decent spools.

I never heard a Yank call a "reel" a "spool" before today!

(Of course, since I read it I really still haven't "heard" it.)

I absolutely agree on those awful self threaders. They seem to have absolutely no desire to grab the film, and no slot to boot!

To me, Posso spools are the best, available in 200, 400, 600, 800 (plastic) and 1200 ft (metal). Some stores still carry them here, or you can buy them from Wittner in Germany.

Yes they are Grasso spools and I agree with all those comments and would like to add one more.......They are a pain in the A*se to thread the film back onto the spools. Those spools just never grip the film.
If you do happen to like these spools then Derann do sell them [Frown]
