Dear Andrew,

The only official extract from Fantasia was the 200ft of "The Sorceror's Apprentice", although over the years most of the other parts of the films have been released as seperate extracts, but none of them had stereo sound. I think all in all, nearly a complete feature can be made from these extracts, but with varying print quality, as some of the extracts were taken off well used masters.

I have most of the Fantasia extracts and enjoy them very much. (I even have "Clair de Lune", which was edited out of the feature before the original release) The problem you'd run into with weaving them into the full feature is they are missing much of the interesting little bits of commentary in between the musical sections, and also a lot of the remaining commentary is in French, so unless you speak French, it's a film just begging to be re-recorded.

From what I've seen on this forum, the "Rites of Spring" Extract is not the complete section. Since this is one of the two I don't have I'm not sure what's missing.

Fantasia 2000 is available feature length from Derann, and they'll sell it by the reel if you'd like it on the installment plan. It's on my "Maybe Someday" list.

Derann also released most of the extracts from the original Fantasia including the the Clair de Lune extract. You could make up the whole feature minus the Sorcerers extract as they didnt have the rights to that.
They may still have some or keep your eyes open on the s/h lists.

Kev.

Jan, I'm astounded at the information you provided for Andrew. [Smile] Now for a little commentary. [Big Grin]

Since the original release of Fantasia was pre-stereo it is probably printed in super eight in mono. Dvd is probably digitally decoded for a stereo effect. [Confused]

These are the ones I'm aware of:

Toccata and Fugue, Bach(1x400)Derann
The Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky (1x400)Derann
The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Dukas(1x200)Disney
Pastoral Symphony, Beethoven(1x400)Derann
Dance of the Hours,Ponchielli (1x400)Derann
The Rites of Spring, Stravinsky (1x400)Derann
Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria, Mussorgsky/Schubert(1x400)Derann

Clair de Lune, Debussy(1x100)Derann

I'm not 100% sure of the sequence, since I rarely watch it on video and am used to seeing them in random order! I'm sure setting "Clair de Lune" apart is OK since it was taken out early on.

To me, the best of the lot is "The Nutcracker" followed by "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"

All are available new except "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "Clair de Lune". "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is common on the Derann second hand lists (-usually with the note "Slight colour fade"). "Clair de Lune" is pretty rare.

The rest of them are pretty commonly available used.

Actually Fantasia was recorded in true stereo sound and several large venues were specially equipped at great expense to present it that way during it's original release. Disney dubbed it 'Fantasound".

1. To get the proper sequence, just look at the chapters of a DVD or laserdisc release and go from there.

2. Once you have all the segments, a good way to jazz up the program would be:

a) Add the trailer for the original film to the start of the program;

b) End the program with the trailer attached for Fantasia 2000 (this is a great idea because the original end credits are not attached to the last segment. The trailer for Fantasia 2000 makes a good closeing piece before the houselights come back up.

Thanks to Kev, I do have this complete masterpiece and really do enjoy it.

I saw some Fantasia extracts in German boxes... Maybe our resident experts could tell us if they are any different.

Hi Robert, welcome to the Forum. You are right about Fantasound. All of you, check out this very informative page.

Steve is right about the "Rite of Spring": Derann did only the second half of this section, starting with the beginning of life.
The first part, the creation of earth, is not available on super 8mm.
Best,
Michael

J-M thanks for the info about Germany releases for Fantasia. I would start from this since Germany's market sometimes offer very good prices for 8mm. I don't bother with the sound language since eventually it will be re-recorded.

So, can anybody from German give me the germany titles for the above sequence english version (if the above is in the right order).

BTW: I notice more members come up for the last three weeks. Good to see that!

Thanks,

SGB thanks for the link.

Now taking the advantage of his Ebay's description, here is the right sequence from the digests had ever been released.

REEL 1 = MAIN TITLE AND OPERATIC OPENING INTRO WITH ORCHESTRA SETTING UP AND INTRODUCING THE CONDUCTOR ( AS MAIN FEATURE ) AND AS RELEASED, THEN TOCCATA AND FUGUE IN D MINOR, THE NUTCRACKER SUITE

REEL 2 - THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE, THE RITE OF SPRING AND CLAIR DE LUNE

REEL 3 - THE PASTORAL SYMPHONY BY BEETHOVEN

REEL4 - DANCE OF THE HOURS, NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN

I don't know how the previous owner put the Main Title and Operatic opening, as this probably were not released seperatly, weren't they?

cheers

Holy tweeters Batman, you guys have enlightened me to some innovative audio info I never new..."Fantasound".

Here's some info I found;

Fantasound refers to the proprietary surround sound system used by Disney in the 1940's for the movie "Fantasia". Disney's Fantasound technology created a surround sound field with left front, center front, right front, left rear and right rear channels. The main soundtrack incorporated only the front three channels; the two rear channels were recorded on a separate reel of film, and steered in separately when needed.

And, if you really want to get into the nity grity of it, check out this link;

I have a 400 footer of "Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria" which I bought used. It has a lot of scratches over on the right side of the image. I'd consider replacing this reel if I was reasonably sure I'd not get another one just like it.

How about it? Is this a problem unique to my print or is this something in the negative that shows uo everywhere? (Anybody else have this one?)

Perhaps not the proper place to post an ebay listing, but it is relevant to this discussion -- this time it's priced to sell:

I LOVE FANTASIA.....especially the RITE OF SPRING...which true kid wouldn't LOVE animated dinosaurs......but the music by Stravinsky is without a doubt, the reason I Love it. I was thoroughly disappointed when i recieved the Derann print which missed the opening CReation of the Earth sequence. BUT,that creation scene IS AVAILABLE ON SUPER 8. For i did happen to find it. It was released as BIRTH OF THE WORLD. I am sure a bootleg copy, the picture quality is pretty good, below par the official releases.It runs about 400 feet.....and had an annoying narrator, before, i re-recorded and spliced before the derann print. RAN it for the first time last week. WHAT A DIFFERENCE it made. AMAZING! i was fortunate to have found it. VERY RARE i hear.
