For $4.95 how wrong can you go?

Even if you take it home and it turns out to be a film eater, at least somebody can use it for a boat anchor!

I ended up buying this for 4.95 bought a new bulb off ebay for 5.00 and it is like new both sound and speed work great even tried some home movies with the video camera and adjusted the speed to eliminate the flicker it works great.

A great running variable speed sound projector for $9.95? What a bargain! Now Jim can sell it on eBay for $125!

What a nice find. Of course, Gaf machines had a reputation for not being too sturdy or too easy on film, but for that price, you've got a good backup machine. I forty years, I've never ever seen any film or projectors at any thrift store or yard sale. Not even Castle headline editions...nothing.

I think the lack of 8mm stuff at sales comes from the "film is dead" myth. People are reluctant to even put it out if they do have it. Unfortunately the next stop after that is a landfill!

This is why when I'm driving to work on garbage days I keep a sharp eye out for projectors at the curb. I found a machine recently! It was a sewing machine, but I found it! (They all look like projectors from a distance!) Oh, well: My niece needed a sewing machine anyway...

Somebody found out I have 8mm films once and told me "Nobody uses that stuff anymore". I said "I'm somebody!"

Steve,

so true! I've been to a couple of the region's largest flea markets and there's never a trace of anything film-related, ever. Quite frustrating, actually, since you can find just about anything else in terms of vintage electronics and such. The only two finds I've ever made were 1. a B&H 8mm projector which was nothing special (nor did I need yet another one) [Wink] and 2. a 200ft standard-8 cartoon, b/w silent, which I actually did buy simply because I felt sorry for the film - it was sitting on a table outside, sealed in a metal can, baking in the relentless heat of the summer-afternoon sun. (I did save it before VS got to it, whew.) [Cool]

Hey, I guess I've been lucky. My first Eumig 810 was found in mint condition at a thrift store. My wife found the Beaulieu 708 in the back of an old radio store in a large permanent flea market. I've found films - and some rare titles - at various yard sales. Found a nice little Bauer T1M a week ago at another sale (for 15 euros). So, yes, film items can be found but don't expect to find them [Smile] .

Jan, my friend, I suppose this is once in a lifetime...
That Beaulieu now runs in another good home as my house is becoming more and more like an Elmo shelter. [Big Grin]
