Yes, it is I... still not dead yet (they can't put me under, no Sir, they just can't)... now, instead of updating y'all on what I went through the last few months, I have a simple question for tonight. [Smile]

Does anybody know if Super 8 film (15m cartridges) is available in Argentina, specificially in or around Buenos Aires? The reason I'm asking is I'm considering taking my Bauer super-8 camera with me on a trip there (which is in February 2008)... and rather not wanting to deal with the worries of putting film through airport scanners, I thought about buying film while in B.A., then sending it home via mail (or perhaps directly to Dwayne's) instead of taking it home myself.

Failing that, what *IS* the safe and proven method of taking unprocessed (and initially unexposed) film with me and keep it safe from x-rays? [Smile]

Welcome back where you belong!

In my most humble opinion, airport X-rays are really a non-issue, especially where low speed films are concerned.

About 5 years ago we traveled from New York to Sakhalin, Russia via Moscow. We had K-40 for my movie camera and 400 ASA print film for my wife's point and shoot.

All of this film was X-rayed as follows:

1) Once at JFK on the way to Russia
2) Once at the Moscow domestic airport on the way to Sakhalin.
3) Once at the Sakhalin airport on the way back to Moscow
4) Twice (Once at check-in, once more at the gate) at the Moscow International airport on the way back to New York.

-all of the film came out just fine, and our adoption was successful as well.

PS: did this routine twice!

Ditto for our trip from New York to Frankfurt and then home via Vienna the year before.

Ditto for several trips from New York to San Francisco, San Diego and South Texas as well.

Please note: we didn't adopt children in all of these places!

I actually have a lead lined film bag, but before we went to use it we decided the appearance of trying to hide something wouldn't go over too well about 9 months post Sept 11th, so we didn't use it.

There are some machines which are basically CT-scanners set up to sniff out explosives, but these are clearly marked to warn people to remove film for hand inspection. Everything else should be fine.

So just enjoy your trip and don't worry about it.

Jan, I have travelled with super8 film (mosly k40 and E64t) in my carry on on sevral European airports, without noticing any damage to the film. Once I did get a blank K40 back from Switzerland that did go through an x-ray machine, mut I suspect it somehow was'nt exposed.

Do not know if the x-ray macines are different over there however. There are a number of threads about x-ray and demanding hand inspection of the film that you can read at www.filmshooting.com. It seems to be a subject that comes up from time to time.

well, I have to think about whether I'll even be taking my super-8 camera with me... I heard stories about Argentinian airport officials *stealing* valuable things from travellers' suitcases... my friend (who I'm visiting in B.A.) tells me that her Dad had a digital camera in his suitcase once which was simply gone by the time he returned home from his trip. o_O

Perhaps a Canon A520 digital camera is an easier loss to stomach than a Bauer super-8 piece of jewelry. [Wink]
