I was shuffling through my refridgeration unit, looking at my beloved prints, and I got to wondering just exactly how many optical prints I actually have. I thought perhaps clse to 40, and it turned out that there are 49 features, and a number of optical sound shorts. Here they are ...

2. Diamonds Are Forever
3. From Russia With Love
4. The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams
5. The Hot Rock

9. Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins
10. Children of a Lesser God
11. Yellowbeard
12. Stand and Deliver
13. The Billion Dollar Hobo
14. Superman 3
15. The Golden Seal
16. Purple Rose of Cairo
17. Broadway Danny Rose
18. Charge of the Model T's
19. Harry and Son

49. The Thirty Nine Steps

Shorts :

1.British Travelogue/Ads
2.Winterhawk (final reel of feature)

4.Trailer Horn (Donald Duck/Disney)
5.The Jaywalker (U.P.A.)
6.Lost Hunter (Educational film)
7.Game Animals of Oregon (Educational films)
8.Educational/Environmental film. (hunting safety)

This really isn't to brag, just to give folks who may not know, what's out there in optical sound features. I believe that in a future issue of Steve Osbournes REEL IMAGE magazine, I'll have a list of well over 200 hundred known to exist titles in optical sound.

Yes it has Mark, but you'd be surprised at how much I have tended to pay for the features, sometimes more, more often, a lot less than you'd think, (Like Futureworld, 28 pounds, and a cracking print!)

I've come to the point where, unless it's something special, I usually don't collect anymore, unless I'm "Updating" a print, (because of fade or wear on the print). Right now, only five of those prints show any fade, and with them all being in a frost free refridgeration unit, (in freezer storage bads, with selica gel packs to keep any and all moisture away), they will last for a good long while!

Fingers crossed!

Dear Osi
I enjoyed your series on the super8 optical prints in FFC,very much.It must have took you lots of research.Congratulations ,but... Why was the filmography such a jumble ? Shouldn't you put it in some alphabetical order? This is my only criticism. And a number of additions,in my collection : THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT DIE (shortened, 2x600),AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (complete !),A PRIVATE FUNCTION. This last is an exception to the rule.I got the first two thirds of the film (about an hour) from a Derann jumble sale of odds and ends, years ago. I have never found the third part,or a complete copy again. Even worse,in the whole length of the print, sound precedes the picture by about twenty seconds! So,it must have been a reject copy ! I also remember reading that ZELIG is also available.

I very glad to hear that you enjoyed that series of works on optical sound super 8, but I'm rather PISSED, as they promised me a copy of that magazine, and I still haven't received it!

Sheesh, everybody else has received it, but not me?

As for the film list (which since them, would be approximately thirty more titles longer, as I've discovered others) being in order, I just don't have time.

You must understand, I have two books under production, one Christmas album just finished and being marketed and two other
film related productions going on even as we write, so, just getting the chance to write those articles has just been luck, (that I had the window of opportunity!).

I hope that the article, "In Search of Hoppity" (concerning my search for great prints of that film, "Hoppity Goes to Town" on super 8 and the history of that print) will be included in the mag in the future. I plan on other articles, but I'm just bogged down at the moment.

I love hearing about the opticals that you have ran into though, as it's so cool to find that the number of titles that exist on optical sound Super 8 is ever expanding. I'm still hoping to find an optical feature print of "Tron" or "BladeRunner"!

Superman 4 was also a verified available feature in optical sound, and it was quite available for awhile, very rare now, but then, it wasn't all that hot as a feature.

At least Superman Three had that neat battle between the good and bad Superman. The only downside to the optical feature is that deleted the bowling alley scene.

But I hated the incredibly BAD credit sequence at the beginning, especially after those nice "zooming" credits of the first two films. It was one of the best comedy moments in the film, but it just didn't fit with the feel of the film. Personal opinion.

I agree with you on that one Osi!
The film itself (Superman 3) is very good but those credits just look cheep!
superman 4 was very good in it's storyline but lacked the action that the 1st 2 films had, it was almost as tho no one in it could be bothered anymore, I like NUCLEAR MAN though!

Osi...Now you just have to get Ghostbusters in Optical!

I'd certainly love to get that print in optical sound, it was a good flick!

I've really slowed down my aquisition of features, however, optical or magnetic. n occasional feature, but mostly the rarities.

Like that hunting film which I got from the sadly missed Jan Bister (we all miss ya Jan!), which is a mixture of live action animal/wildlife scenes and animation. It was made by a college as an educational film and actually made it onto super 8 optical sound. A real find.

I think the problem these days is that most of the readily available optical sound features I already have, or I occasionally find an unfaded print and replace an earlier copy of the print, (as I've done with a few).

When a print that I really desire comes up, then I can always come up with some money, but there are some I wouldn't bother with, like "Footloose" which, while entertaining enough, I didn't like some of the "messages" to the film, so I chose not
to add it to the collection. I don't like films that "preach" to me, whether about religion or otherwise.

That and, heck, I already have now more than that 49, and quite frankly, i almost have enough Super 8 film to watch each film once a year and fill the year. Good heavens! That's enough!
(though not all that is features).

If "hour long" (i.e. 45 to 55 minute) tv shows count as features, do add THE MORNING AFTER episode from THE PERSUADERS series,to the list,(and presumably other Technofilm releases).I forgot I also have it in my collection !!!

Panayotis

You bring up a good point about optical sound prints.

Over in the UK, (I don't think America or anywhere else did any!), they released on Super 8 optical sound a number of hour long 60's and early 70's TV shows, the Persuaders among them, and I ran into a "Department S" episode, with perfect color and incredible sharpness, that I sure as hell wish I had kept, talk about a rarity! Osi, you dumbass!

I don't know how many were released from each show, however.

Could anybody over in the UK enlighten us further on this optical sound development?

Those ITV episodes (DEPARTMENT S, PERSUADERS, THE BARON and perhaps others) were Italian Technofilm releases issued in many different languages : English,Italian,German, Nordish and even Arabic. A number of these were also released in optical sound but I don't know which ones or how many. Of course in England you will find the english speaking copies.
