Hey guys! I was rather annoyed to see that, when I expected to have the Universal Digest of "Smokey and the Bandit" I had "Smokey and the bandit 2", and while it's in good shape, it's not what I ordered!

But I got to wondering as to how rare this might be as well. Fortunately, it is in mint condition, letterboxed. This had to have been one of Universal 8's last digests to be released, (as it came out the same year as "The Blues Brothers" digest, and "The Blues Brothers" was pretty much Universal 8's last digest.

I didn't think they got the opportunity to even release it. I have a silver-covered catalog from U-8 that announces it coming out, but I had never seen it anywhere.

Good heavens! Then this must be rare! The film itself was originally released in august 1980, so the digest would probably have been released in 1981. At least the color is great and it's scratchless, though I do wish it was the first film. It does have a whole bunch of funny lines from "Buford T Justice"!

"When we get home, I'm gonna kick yo mama in the butt!"

"I'll say it again, there's no way you could have come from my loins!"

"and more, of course!"

Yes, that's incredibly rare! Where on earth did you get that?
Would love to see what the U8 boxes look like.

Are we talking the 2 x 400 7046 + 7047 here? I have that in my collection but was unaware that it was rare. Excellant - that's good news [Smile] . I also have the 1 x 400 4246 Smokey and the Bandit, both great films with a certain re-watchable quality about them.

I'm still hanging out for a copy of Blues Brothers though and they do seem to be coming up for sale more often now.

Guys,

This release was pretty common here in the UK,I have picked up at least 2 secondhand copies in the past, I think it was released in the same batch as 1941 etc.

It is very well edited and far more bearable than the overblown feature version in my opion.

Cheers MW

I think the reason why the seller I bought this from was confused was because he was selling someone elses collection, and the person had put an image from the Universal 8 catalog of "Smokey and the Bandit", that AND the leader on the film itself says "Smokey and the Bandit" and no mention of "2" on it, until the film is running.

It would have to have been one of Universals last releases. I wonder what would have rounded out the last few releases? Anybody know for a fact? I'm betting some of them would consist of :

Smokey and the Bandit 2
1941
The Blues Brothers

Note: I'm only saying these as they were released theatrically
sometime in 1980 and so they would probably have been released in 81.

What other ones.

Osi

I think you should keep that version even though you got ripped off.

I just got Smokey & the Bandit on DVD and I do have Part 1 on super 8 as a 2 reeler. Warming colors, not red or pink. Make me an offer and it's yours. That's what you want, right?

Not too rare.....

The Blues Brothers was far from U-8's last release. Smokey 2 came after that and Coal Miner’s Daughter, Xanadu and The Incredible Shrinking Woman were all released after Smokey 2. Check out the U-8 list.

I traded in my Smokey II print to Steve Osborne some months ago...already mounted on an 800 foot reel...didn't like the original movie...didn't like the digest...also had soft focus, in my opinion. Wasn't aware that it was that rare, but still wouldn't have kept it...it stayed on the shelf unprojected after the first run....from the day I got it in about 1980 to just a couple of months ago. Chip..is that where you got it...Steve's?

I don't think it was from Steve. I did not buy it new but I do not really remember who the seller was. It could have been a flea market.

Chip, I'm over at the library right now, (my computer went down), could ou send me an e-mail as to how much you'll let the "fair color" Smokey and the Bandit" go for?

The transation would take longer, but be done just the same.

I really don't know.

Maybe a trade film for film, based on color warming be the same. We each pay postage to ship the movies...they cross in the mail...but I'd be interested in a feature if that's not asking too much.....I could throw in the three reeler of TOWERING INFERNO so that'd be a 5 reel show from me, which could equal the lgnth of a feature from you.

Just a thought.....please suggest some titles you'd be willing to let go and I'll pick from the list.

Since money is tight for everyone now, maybe a trade is the best solution for both of us.

(And I want to make it clear this is Bandit Part ONE that you'll be getting from me.)

Let me know....

Chip,

I'll definitely look through my collection, but I don't kbnow how successful I'll be at finding something for trade. like most collectors, most of my stuff is "keepers" these days, but I will look through it all.

Thanks for the offer Chip!

Gary,

I got a copy of 'Smokey and the Bandit II' from Steve Os. in the fall of '08 so I may have your former copy.

I agree with your assessment of the feature and the print quality (soft focus) but I like the digest.

I'm happy to know its only been run about 4 times!

The feature might have been more sucsessful if they would have just released the digest into theatres!!!

Bill
