ps: romantic movies are not my cup of tea, so I don't want to see this movie as a full feature)

It is not easy to follow a digest if we haven't seen the feature before. This is what I got when seeing "A Farewell to Arms (Ken Films, 400").

I found the strange flow of story when Rock Hudson was captured by Police and his sergeant friend was accused to be from the enemy combatant. The sergeant was then sentenced to death by a martial court.

Can you explain to me what is the relation of the above part with the whole story.

Brief synopsis of film -

Set in Europe during World War I, the plot focuses on the tragic romance between Frederick Henry (Rock Hudson), an American ambulance driver serving in the Italian Army, and English Red Cross nurse Catherine Barkley (Jennifer Jones). Major Rinaldi(Victorrio De Sica) envies their relationship and has Catherine transferred to Milan.
When Frederick is wounded in battle, he finds himself in the hospital where Catherine works. They continue their affair until he returns to battle. Now-pregnant Catherine settles in Switzerland, and when her many letters to Henry remain unanswered because his responses are held up by the censors, she assumes he has abandoned her. As the Armistice nears, Frederick journeys to Switzerland to find Catherine, who dies in childbirth with him at her side.

The film was a semi- biographical account of Ernest Hemmingways exploits during the war. It was directed in 1957 by Charles Vidor after being shunned by John Huston and it was a re-make of a much better version, starring Gary Cooper.

It also is spoilt by, in my opinion, the performance of Jennifer Jones, who has to be one of the worst actresses to come out of Hollywood. The fact that she was married to David O. Selznick ensured that she got most of her acting roles (my apologies to any J.J fans out there - just my opinion)

The Ken digest is really quite badly edited and therefore very confusing. In fairness, it would have been a difficult story to edit and maintain the plot, in 17 minutes.
