Hans, do your Marketing have good color until now.

I knew (except for Raiders of the Lost Ark which is on AGFA stock) all Marketings are on Kodak SP, which are now to be brownish. I have Airplane which I rate as the best colors than other. Still when I compare with AGFA stock they are weak colors.

Share with us please.

Winbert, as you can see most German prints were on polyester film.
As I remember correctly, Grease held up very well.
The polyester film runs so smooth and silent through the projector.

The Godfather turned a bit brownish.

I just made a screenshot from Rosemary's Baby.
This film seems to held up well.

Does anyone have the Barbarella selected scene or feature? Out of the few Marketing Films that I have or have had, the Barbarella is the only one that has turned completely red.

Hans - Out of curiosity is that Rosemary's Baby screen shot from the three reel digest or the full feature? My feature has a brownish tint while my three reeler is just gorgeous and looks much like your photo... I am very jealous if that's a full feature print looking so nice...

Wayne - Given the fact that Barbarella has been my favorite film of all time since I was 13 I have multiple prints of the various Marketing releases... my experience has always been that the features have all turned a little (not totally red or brown but they are definitely leaning towards red) and the digests are even worse... my 200' and 400' and 3 X 400' digests are all severely lacking in color... BUT... I recently had a very nice surprise ordering a German three reel print and the colors turned out to be absolutely gorgeous... I dubbed the english sound from the DVD and it's now one of my favorite prints in my collection. Of course the digests are all adapted scope which helps with the huge, lavish sets in the film.

PS: A few months ago I got to meet Barbarella hersself, the still lovely and sweet Jane Fonda backstage at her Broadway show, and it ranks up there with the high points in my life!

Thats great Brian!

About the Marketing 3 parters-

I have the PERFECT example of differences between the German prints and the American prints. I have the 3 parter of "Samson and Delilah". I bought them as a set, but for some reason, reels #1 and #3 were in German Marketing boxes, and reel #2 was in an American Marketing box. When I got it, I thought maybe they just ran out of boxes at the U.S. office. But when I compare the prints, its like night and day! Reels #1 and #3 have BEAUTIFUL, rich colors, while reel #2 (American print) has almost no colors at all! The difference is amazing. I wish I had more German prints.

James.

The Germans got the best deal here!!

Most of the 2nd batch of Marketing 3 x 400fts appear to have been printed on polyester stock by the German labs,I still have a very nice unfaded print of AIRPLANE.

If you were lucky you could pick up German prints in english of some of the 1st batch too such as BARBARELLA which was a far superior print than the US version it came in German style heavy boxes too.

I also also had a print of GREASE which came like this and the polyester print was slightly better too.

I think Marketing or Derann started importing prints from Germany when the 1st batch of releases sold out in the UK.

So you never know a decent colour print may be out there somewhere??

I remember a German member here remind me via a private message that there is no any relation between polyester stock vs acetate stock in terms of fading process.

He says that the most important is how was the lab process done. Polyester can also fade as well as Acetate can also LPP (low fade).

He adds that polyester vs acetate is more about the thick vs thin matter.

Can someone give more explanation on this ?

(ps: my Germany print of "Cross of Iron" is also on polyester and has faded to brownish, because it is on KOdak SP)

Hi-Winbert

Yes I agree, its probably luck of the draw really as to what lab printed/fixed which film etc.

Cheers MW

Nice photo, Brian.

I'm a big JF fan.

One of my favourite films - BAREFOOT IN THE PARK.

Brian, unfortunately I only have the 3 reel digest from Rosemary's Baby.

I also have a copy of Madingo (German, acetat) on 3 reels and it almost totally faded to red.

About acetat and polyester.
Like Winbert said, it seems to me the polyester films tend to slightly fade too.
But unlike the acetat films, no polyester film turned totally red yet.
The great advantage of polyester films are:
-it's much thinner, so more film goes on 1 reel and you can splice 3 reels together on a 240m reel.
-it's much stronger and flexible then acetat.
-it's runs much smoother through the projector, causing less noise.
-it seems to keep better colours then acetat.
-but you can only splice it with tape (no wet splicing).

And last:
I compared my German 3-reel Chinatown (on polyester) with my English 3-reel Chinatown (on acetat) and I can't really see a big difference.
They have kept about the same, good colors.

My print of Barbarella (3x400ft) was always pretty dire anyway but it appears to have turned a little brown. I could be wrong given that so many of these releases were poor in the first place.

Wayne BARBARELLA Full Feature is available on Today's Derann's list:

quote:
109– BARBARELLA– 5x400’ A. Some fade. £150.00. Haven’t seen a print of this wonderfully imaginative, colourful and very swinging sixties SF cult classic for many years. Stars Jane Fonda who takes on the evil Black Queen and goes flying with a Winged Angel...and an angel is love.
be hurry if you need one... as is always gone quick!

I agree.

I'd love to have more German Marketing digests. I went on a STAR WARS binge, (for some odd reason) and every american print I ran into, (400ft digests) whether on Kodak SP or Eastman, were either completely turned or well on they're way ...

Now, here's the funny part ...

I recieved (as reported a month or two ago), a German Marketing
print of STAR WARS, and the color is stunning, with very rich saturation, which I never saw brand new on the american prints ..

... and the strange thing is that the German marketing print is on Kodak SP as well!

I have the 3-part English version of "Ten Commandments". The color on all 3 is fine. Very, very slight fade, but hardly detectable (only to a collector). My only regret is the quick title cards they inserted in place of the real credits, but it does leave more footage for getting right to the movie. The editing is good althought a bit choppy on some places and there are spots where the audio from one scene slightly overlaps into the next scene before fading out. I don't think it's a defect of the print, but rather how it was done in editing at the lab that Marketing used. It's quite prominent in the "Red Sea" scenes where it happens twice. Other than that I would definitely recommend it.
