Hi all,

I've been a member here for a while and played with various formats but have decided for my situation and requirements, 8mm is a good route to go down.

I do have a few questions though which will clinch this and I'm hoping someone can help out:

I see there are a few projectors out there which can handle stereo sound, but how many prints actually included stereo and more importantly, do any of them carry dolby stereo? I am very interested in a few of the Derann prints and I'd snap them up, but sound may be a factor in my decision making, they are not cheap.

I'm also wondering what sort of throw distance some of the better projectors can handle with the right lenses, my throw for general use would be very limited (about 2.5 meters) though I'd like to use it in the garden in the summer (doubt I'll have many issues there).

And lastly where do you guys aquire prints from and what do you pay generally? I'm an 80s child so probably the earliest prints I'd want to grab would be early-mid 70s onward. Two movies I really want are Back to the Future and Ghostbusters, but I've not seen them around, are they available does anyone know?

Hey Joel,
Super 8 doesn't have much to offer where DOLBY is concerned. You may want to try to get an ELMO that can record stereo sound onto the magnetic track and use an already DOLBY-mastered audio source. The 80s titles you mentioned were not issued (as far as I can tell) in Super 8. Unless Derann released something I missed. Derann's contract(s) I believe were exclusively with Hammer, Fox, Disney, MGM and a very limited amount of Universal (mostly pre-1960 stuff). I don't believe they got the rights to any of the 80s Universal or Columbia titles and by the time "Ghostbusters" or "BTTF" were released 8mm/16mm were pretty much a thing of the past. You're best bet is trying to get them in 16mm. However, there's probably not alot of DOLBY 16mm being that 16mm was primarily intended for non-theatrical use (ie: School Assemblies, Libraries, Club Functions, etc.).

There is ZERO Dolby on 16mm. Mono optical (occasionally magnetic) sound only on 16, Joel.

Well I think I'll be going for super 8 anyway. I already have an old Eumig which I'm playing around with now and it seems to be a very nice home format. Thanks for the help.

Derann also had a contract with Orion; as I recall Platoon and Robocop came from this now defunct company.

Yeah they had Robocop, though I would have thought this came from their MGM contract since they bought up Orion?

You have to remember there are two MGMs. There is the production and or distribution company which, I believe is a group of investors in Las Vegas; there is also the old MGM library that was aquired by Ted Turner. It is from the old library that all the MGM releases from Derann come from. I believe Silence of the Lambs was released from Orion as well.

Swerving this back on topic somewhat, where might I get a zoom lens for a Eumig projector? The one in mine is very unforgiving with our small throw.

What is the model of your projector, and what are the details on your lens?

It's an RS3000 and the lens says 1,3/13.6mm on it.

I presume, therefore, that the problem is that when you project to an external screen the picture is too large for comfort?

EDIT - Looking around, it seems these lenses don't go below 13mm, how might I increase the size further?

On the contrary, although there is not a ZOOOM below the 13.6mm but there is a 7.00mm fixed made for these rear projection Eumigs. I have one!. email me blagdonian(at)btinternet(dot)com
