Bought at a garage sale a few reels of home movies with a vinegar syndrome smell. I would like to get rid of the film and use the metal reels and cans. My question is: How to clean the reels and cans so can be used once again?

Maybe you shouldn't use those reels and cans to store your films if they caused other films to get VS.

Make sure you store your films in containers that allow air to get in.

I would not use or reuse any reels from vinegar film.

I don't personally think there's a risk using them again but I can't guarantee it. I'd put them in a fairly strong detergent-type solution, and let them dry off.
