Just a little reminder of the Farnworth Film Fair this weekend, and always a very friendly event to come along to.
There you will find: 8mm,16mm, 35mm films plus plenty of equipment.

Farnworth Film Fair report
EFS used to mount two of these collectors events each year but now puts all its efforts into one which takes place each February in the church hall. It was a early start for us as my wife and I had booked a stall so loading the car was a bit back breaking at 7AM in the morning but we got loaded up and away we went only to find the road blocked 10 miles out and had to do quite a lengthy detour making us a little late.

Arriving at Farnworth visitors to the event usually dive in some of the cafes opposite the church for breakfast and a good old chin wag which I myself was hoping to join in, but due to the late arrival we only just managed to get set up 15 minutes before the doors opened. The trading hall was fully booked with something like ten 16mm projectors available, only six super 8 sound machines, two 9-5 sound projectors and piles of films just about everywhere I should think. It was nice to see an influx of younger visitors as well which does reassure you just a little about our hobby and I gave a couple of them a few films to get them started. When I was a kid, yes I was once Derek Simmonds always encouraged me so I figure we should do the same for the young newcomers. Another dealer also gave a student a decent super 8 camera so he could set about some animation so he went away very happy indeed.

Things for sale 16mm.
At a rough guess I would say 50% of the films available were 16mm so if that was your bag then you had a very good choice with some nice vintage titles around. One long term collector has been selling his collection over the last 6 months due to not now being able to lift the gear so he has slowly been parting with his much loved collection. Some very nice titles were spotted from other traders as well and I went round offering to project films for them on one of my machines which was great fun. One of the deluxe CIR splicers was also available along with all manner of cores etc.

Things for sale 8mm.
A good selection of projectors were on offer including a Stereo Eumig, Sankyo but not a Elmo in sight! Films were plentiful in the shape of features, 400ftrs and shorts from the likes of DCR and good old Derann. Looking across the board quite a wide range of titles were available which is always nice to see for the paying guests. If you needed any spools there were plenty of super 8 new ones available as I took quite a few myself as did a couple of other stall holders. During summer last year I purchased a great number of new Bonum 800ft reels & cases and took a few of these with me along with Supaspools and Elmo 1200ft reels. By mid day just about all of them had gone which amazed me. There was also a great deal of interest in Standard 8mm sound features and the two I had available sold quickly.

Other formats.
Laserdiscs, video and 35mm material were available as well and I particularly enjoy chatting to some of the LD collectors who come along searching for discs. Since finally seeing the spare room back wall at our home after piling films against the wall ready to check for years I also found a few LD I already had so these sold quickly to collectors once they spotted them. It’s nice to see things going to hands that really appreciate them.

It’s a funny old game this film collecting.
Two film collectors came over and told me they were having problems with projectors and asked if I could have a look so did. At one point we had a repair station going on as I fitted a new belt to a Pathescope Gem and then swapped the sound head over in a Eumig, and it raised a smile from my wife.The whole day went off very well indeed with a good turnout from collectors which came from far and wide, and as always its so nice to meet face to face and socialise with like minded people.

Next up will be BIG SCREEN TIME at Tadley on April 16th, then it will be my own EAST LANCASHIRE FILM FAIR on April 30th with 20 dealers already booked in. One thing is certain, Cine is far from dead..

PS: We also had a mini Polavision meet as a couple of chaps had been reading the forum posts and also viewing my video clip.

Yup it was a good day out and most were in high spirits for film which was so nice to see and hear.

I had an emotional reunion with one of my purchases on the day as I managed to get hold of another copy of the first Derann Standard 8mm Sound film hire catalogue I originally had many years ago. Boy that fetched back oh so many memories and opening the cover I was greeted by one of Derek Simmond foreword letters which ended thus

“The film and its epic history has a romance of its own. Nothing will ever take its place. We wish your shows every success”

The last few words from Derek reminded me why I still love film as if I had any doubt.

Great to hear about another successful event following the Derann Open Day. Such news, and the anticipated bumber turnout of dealers at the BFCC, makes it an encouraging new start to the year.

Intersting to see Lee's mention of students and younger people - something that dealers and collectors need to bend over backwards to encourage, via publicity to film schools, etc.
