hello to the fanatic celluloid fans here
i`m not really new here but till now just passive and reading.
this will change [Smile]

i would like to offer new and fresh reels to the hungry ones.
so what does it mean exactly:
- 90% trailers, maybe a full movie here and there ...
the trailers based on footage which close to 100% will be
really fresh right out of the box
( think of trailers like:
priest, cars 2, rango, black swan, faster, drive angry,
pir. carribean4, thor, tron legacy, lotr, saw, machete etc.)

- formats : flat/scope depending on the footage
- sound : stereo ; mono i would like to avoid
- language: over 90% german / maybe english a few if possible

but i need to know a few things from you
the s8 freaks/fans and also distributors are welcome.

- which trailers would you like?
- is scope a must? or just flat/letterbox ok?
not everybody has a anamorphic lens

i`m asking because i would like to be you a part of it.
so if enough people are interested in, the majority feedback is
positive i will start the whole thing.

please let me know what you think, your wishes, questions, whatever...
leave a comment here or send a mail to :

Oli, before you start you need to be sure how small the market is. For a trailer you may be able to sell anything up to 30 prints if the price is right. For a feature it would have to be something really special to sell 10 or a dozen prints. But I fear the cost of producing anything on Super 8 now is somewhat prohibitive. It can be done as Osi Osgood and Gian Luca have proved with their 70's US Advert Reel. Plus Larry Arpin of LA Films fame has also issued a few items recently. The market is tiny though so just returning your costs is going to be a struggle.

Sounds like a great idea!! [Smile]

I,m always interested in super 8mm trailers if the price is right,I would stick to the blockbusters+cult movies if I was you.

I,m sure a lot of collectors would be interested in seeing some 70's horror/cult trailers released on super 8mm.

Perhaps you could put a list of titles you are thinking of releasing and get the other forum members to vote on which one they would be willing to purchase?

Now I would be very interested in a Machete trailer!

Good luck with your venture

thank you john and mark for your reply!

the market is small that`s for sure but maybe it can grow a little
if new footage would be offered regularly.
my generel intention is not about big business or becoming the new derann.
i thought about all that a few months and now i`m at the point:
it`s a dirty job but someone ... (think you know what i mean)

so i can`t say anything about prize right now. of course i did
some calculation so 15 prints is some kind of must/minimum.
for every trailer a negativ has to be produced and today you won`t get this for just some bucks.
but are 15 prints such a big number?
i don`t think so if a few private collectors and 2-3 distributors
will order. anyone in every country is welcome.

regarding blockbusters+cult classics:
as i wrote above i would like to avoid mono sound
a lot of the older/cult movies have it and another thing is
to get a good master. newer and upcoming movies will always based
on a fresh master reel never played or maximum a few times.
that`s some kind of guarantee i can give!

and about machete : the whole grindhouse fake trailers on one reel in real s8 is something i have in mind since i saw them the first time on the big screen in 35mm

Oli - I'm all for it and it sounds like some of your releases would be my cup of tea. If you do it for enjoyment rather than for profit, you have the advantage of being able to charge a bit less than a professional distributor would have to, which will probably help sales. Being in Germany must be an advantage, as you would probably be using the lab there.
Personally, though, I'd encourage you to make less than 90% of releases German, as I'm sure it would be easier to sell ones with English sound. Stereo could be problematic as that means you would have to use the old acetate stock which isn't so good in terms of colour and must surely run out sooner or later. I hope the new polyester stock can eventually be striped on the balance stripe as well as the main stripe, but I don't think that's currently possible. I wouldn't rule out older classics if masters could be found. E.g. if you located a 35mm print of 'The Wicker Man' trailer, or trailers for entertaining Hammer films yet to be released (e.g. 'Frankenstein Created Woman' or 'Blood From the Mummy's Tomb'), mono sound and a few signs of wear would be nothing to worry about! Rule out LOTR, though, as they have all been released by Derann.

Oli,

That sounds like a great plan to me! [Smile]

I,m sure you would have no trouble whatsoever selling a 15 print run to the collectors here & abroad.

The fake Grindhouse trailers would make a superb 1st release and I know of @ least three other collectors in the UK who would pledge to purchase a copy here in the UK.

Stereo would be very nice but as Adrian just stated it could problematic.

Just back from the local cinema and the trailers for PRIEST & THOR would look mighty impressive on 8mm!!

thanks adrian,
my own opinion about the language:in a lot of cases the german sync is boring, far away from the original sense etc.
to be honest i would prefer the original one but i can`t get my hands on it. as far as i know there are more collectors of s8 in
the uk than in germany but we are still alive here [Wink]
should i cooperate with derann maybe?....
some of their releases in the past based on german masters and the audio track was changed by them. on the other hand a lot of
collectors are able to do this too and using the audio from a dvd source. would the "wrong language" really be an argument for
not buying a release?
believe me what i can get in english i will grab.
or if there would be a possibility to choose between german/english i wouldn`t ... i would offer both!
fact is getting fresh material without the german sync is just
roundabout 10% or less; sorry for that.

Oli,

35mm trailers with an english soundtrack can be purchased very cheaply here on ebay.co.uk,I actually saw a Grindhouse trailer up for sale a few months back and it went for peanuts.

So getting the source material will very easy hopefully.

mark,

hope you enjoyed the big screen. don`t know which priest trailer
you saw but i would prefer:
1- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JghQgA2HMX8
and
3- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stAfEDSosXc&feature=related

ebay is not really a choice for me because i can`t proof the condition of the material before buying.
(someone on ebay.uk offers the first 16min of apokalypse now
and writing he has some other parts of the movie; anybody
released a nice edited version of this classic movie? [Wink] )

Morning Oli,

I actually prefer trailer 3.

You will actually find that most of the trailers offered on UK ebay are brand new or projected only once so sourcing shouldnt be a problem either.

Come on Guys you are being very quiet out there what other trailers for brand new movies would you like to see released??? [Smile]

No one has ever done anything from Apocalypse Now as far as I know. If they had have done it would be in my collection so that's probably confirmation.

15 prints means your thinking along the right lines so your starting from the right place.

I think you'll find there are more collectors in Germany than the UK now.

have to say thank you again for all the replies per email.
many good statements n`arguments which fit to my own thoughts.
some asking about full lenght features but that`s not a option
right now. maybe in the future in a way like marketing did with
their 2-3 reel versions, a good editing provided.

in the end it`s all about you, the collectors and distributors.
i have to keep it small first. so there`s no way to start with
a stock like 5 different railers, 1-2 full features and saying
there it is, choose what you like.
don`t want to step on anybodys feet here but my impression is
that some people think it`s very easy and can be done for a few cents. so for the younger generations this:
wanna have a lot of full features? best quality? cheap prices?
sorry, therefor you have to switch to the digital media market
and buy a dvd or blueray. collecting celluloid is not like buying some apps for your i-phone during the lunch.
just my 2 cents about it.

another thing about generations:
i understand the love for the older classic movies, having my own
favs from that time where actors had charakter, a movie was great
because the acting itself was a big part of it. sad that today a lot of actors are clones and movies are often just about the newest computer animation and was there a story?
but hey, it`s about fun and entertainment.
there are a lot of releases out there regarding older movies.
so to the "old" people (meaning it in a very respectful way):
give the new stuff a chance too because it seems that there is
more hunger for fresh footage.

I totally agree with you Oli,its going to take a lot of time and effort on your part to produce any 8mm release so of course that must be reflected in the final price of the end product.

When do you think you will be able to start production?

By the way Apocalypse Now had a full length official super 8mm release in Italy of all places!!

ICE Age 4 / The Rite / Pirates of the Caribien 4 Harry Potter 7 ...itīs give so beautiful new Trailers !!!

Egal welche rauskommen würden...ich würde wahrscheinlich alle nehmen...lach
Habe auch schon die neuen Trailerrollen von Larry Arpin hier..die sind klasse

mark,
good to know about apocalypse, so john was wrong.
starting the production could be anytime.
personally i`m thinking about mid/end april or may, maybe earlier.
just one trailer first but therefor i need enough definitive preorders.and i need more replies which one and feedback generally!

maybe the interest is not so big as i thought and people are satisfied with what they can get and trade. living with the situation like it is and being happy for the next decades with the same old reels? this would mean to me that all the posts i found in the last 2 years are just bubble talking(?).

about prices:
of course different ones for private collectors/distributors.
what i can say about calculation is, that it`s not possible
to offer on a level like derann and others do. but is it necessary? i think it can`t be compared because the situation on
the market today is a different one. a lot of labs closed and the
ones who are still on say take this offer or not.
we all have to handle with this situation as it is and love this
organic, beautiful thing called celluloid!

hi andi,

thanks for your reply. at first don`t let us change the language here. it wouldn`t be fair towards the other people here because
everybody is welcome and should be involved. but you can send me
a email in german of course anytime.
one of your thoughts is also mine. a lot of germans wouldn`t have problems watching a trailer in english. just 2 and a half
minutes and often there`s not much talking in it.
please shoot me a mail with some feedback about how many
german collectors do you know/ would be seriously interested in.
have a chat with your friends and name me some trailers you would
like to see.

Oli - The 35mm Forum http://www.35mmforum.com/forums/index.php is worth considering as a source of trailers. Plenty of very cheap modern new or excellent condition trailers there.

I wish you every success, but have you investigated factors such as the cost of negatives, and the additional cost of sound recording, unless you are equipped to do it yourself?

If you decide to proceed and start with a trailer, perhaps you could list a selection of options here (and on other film collecting forums) and see which would attract the maximum orders. Keep in mind that there ar ealso at least 3 or 4 publications that collectiors subscribe to, which will offer additional scope for publicity.

Of ones mantioned, I'd certainly be interested in 'The Black Swan' and 'The Rite'. As a Hammer collector, I'd also love trailers for the new films now being released - and I've been trying to get a 35mm trailer myself for 'Let Me In', with a view to trying to make an 8 and/or a 16mm release possible. For some reason, 'Let Me In' has not been released in Germany.

@ adrian
"let me in" is a remake of "so finster die nacht" (2008); this one
we had on the big screen.
collected around 60 trailers in the last weeks, proofing the quality, cleaning, putting some little reels together and gave it
a try on the big screen. which one should i choose..... it`s difficult and maybe i let the dices decide :-)
actually on the first places are:
300, halloween(remake),death race.
or maybe wait till i get all the trailers of the upcoming
super8 movie (what kind of start would that be ... :-) )

got a lot of feedback but over the half saying it`s to late.

The 'Super 8' trailer has attracted comment elsewhere and it obviously has some unique selling points for S8 collectors, so I'd say it's likely to sell about as well as anything could nowadays. Also, we will probably nevewr again have such a good opportunity to promote Super 8 in general to curious people unfamiliar with it.

Another interesting possibility could be a trailer to 'Apollo 18'. This trailer was shown at my local cinema a few weeks ago before the release of the film was postponed to early next year, so if this was released on 8, not only would it be a curio in view of the release date, but it would be available well in advance of the actual film appearing.

Oli,

Thank you for taking on this project! I'm not a huge fan of trailers (give me a digest or excerpt anytime) but if your price is reasonable, I'll gladly support your first release. Yes, Super 8 would be a great way to start!

Make this and others similar to it in S8mm. You will not have a problem selling them.

Hey Oli, it's OSI of "GIOSI Films" here ...

We were thinking along the same lines. What I would suggest (and it's what we'll be doing as well), is, unless it has an incredible fan base for it, don't go with the modern films for releases. Try the classic films of old and the rare trailers if you can find them.

Do plenty of research as to what trailers are already out there on Super 8, as it is surprising as to just how many are out there. We have been planning a "20th Century Sci-Fi" reel, about 14 minutes, of classic sci-fi/horror trailers on one reel, and finding great films, that have not had the trailer already released, is quite hard. Really, the only thing that's holding this back at the moment is the money aspect.

It's up to you, but I wuldn't concentrate on flat/letterboxed trailers, as not all people have a scope lense in thier set up.

Just a few words for ya! Best of luck!

OSI

thanks a lot for your replies!

@ doug
digest/excerpt/edited versions like marketing did on 2/3/4 reels,
i`m not against it. no problem for me to do the editing and in fact
a lot of movies would fit completely on 3 reels.
but ..... :
you need a reel good, perfect master and totally agreeing with osi the money is a big point in the whole story.
it`s much easier to start with some nice trailers and cheaper
for the collectors.

@ osi
why not the modern ones? finding good masters for the old/classic ones is not easy; i`m sure you know it by yourself.
maybe i`m to ambitious but in my opinion a master should be really fresh/unused or just played a few times.
even if it`s a movie from the 80s/90s.
this brings me to the point about money again. i`m not the type of guy who will come around with the excuse "oh sorry people a better master couldn`t be found". the quality of the product and the money people have to spend has to be in a good balance.
so about older movies, lets say from the 60s/70s, that`s more or less out of discussion.

regarding the format:
scope is great but as you said just a few percent use/own a anamorphic lens. so i will concentrate on flat and letterbox.

and yes, i totally agree with you about what`s released.
you never know what is really out there.

Posted by John Clancy (Member # 49) on April 30, 2011, 01:56 AM:

Oli, very few serious collectors do not have a 'Scope lens. 'Scope releases have actually been a good selling point in more recent times so I would recommend 'Scope material where it is available.

I have some older 35mm trailers and they're in perfect condition so don't rule out older releases which will actually prove more popular in most cases given the poor standard of cinema films generally today.

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on April 30, 2011, 09:07 AM:

Personally I'm interested in older classics (although as Osi says it's important to take care to avoid previous releases) but I'd also love modern trailers to films like 'Black Swan'. Ged at Derann once mentioned an important point to me regarding modern titles: they sell better if you can get them out quickly around the time the film is released. This is understandable as it's fun to surprise your audience with something new and topical. I'll never forget the time I screened a CHC release that included a scope trailer to 'Terminator 3' in a show at least two months before the film were released. The audience was stunned! I appreciate that will be harder now, though.

I'd have to agree with John regarding scope; although some collectors don't have it, those that do often seem more orientated towards buying scope items. The recent release of the 'Avatar' trailer was a bit frustrating letterboxed and I'm sure it would have sold more in scope. Steve Osborne recently said that his current top seller was the scope trailer to 'Premature Burial'.

Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on April 30, 2011, 10:32 AM:

I'm not ruling out scope trailers either ...

Persoanlly, there is one modern trailer I would LOVE to find!

It was the very rarely seen, (only out there for a short bit) for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. I don't remember the exact running time, but it was almost like a short film. I think that it ran about six or eight minutes.

The funny thing is that I have nearly every trailer from this movie, but I believe that the three main trailers all scope and about three minutes each, have been released.

Some of thr trailers for our upcoming release are ...

Battle Beyond the Stars
Lifeforce
Outland

Posted by Oli Heln (Member # 2496) on April 30, 2011, 10:41 AM:

@ adrian

"..get them out quickly" regarding the modern ones:
that`s not so easy( just can tell about from my point of view
and the sources i can get my hands on).
what the movie companys deliver nowadays is more and more digital content. in fact since the digital projection came up the analog content is just about 30/40%. should i use the digital content as master sources? yeah, great! 2k/4k resolution transfer to celluloid and the whole calculation would explode!
and by the way do you know a real good attorney? [Eek!]
i`m not out for any kind of fight with the movie companys.

two real good arguments and i think you agree that the only way is to concentrate on 35mm as a master source. so coming back to the 30/40% analog content mentioned above, what does it mean in detail....
in the past you got a lot more trailers than you really need at your cinema. 5-8-10 of the same kind for each movie or more if there`s a trailer a-b-c etc. a lot of them fresh/unused find there way out to private collectors, printing labs etc.
so it`s not so extraordinary that terminator 3 and others were released on s8 before the movie runs officially on the big screen.
now the situation is totally different.
just my two cents and from my experiences over the years.
could write a lot more but a forum is just for posting and not for writing down a book [Big Grin] .

One little suggestion I'd make - although you might already be thinking about this - is to come up with a good name, at least if you hope to release a reasonable number of items, basically because it sounds good. E.g. when Larry Arpin was selling trailer reels as "L.A. Films" it was quite an evocative name that enhanced both the sound of the company and the experience of buying the releases. You could maybe consider something like "OH-8 Films"!

some news ....

things are going not so fast as i would like it but it goes on and on.a first release this year, maybe around autumn or 2 should be possible.parallel working on a website for this project.
it`s necessary in the working process to step over the 16mm, so i`m thinking well.. why not 8 and 16mm ..(?)
beside all this i`m trying to buy some filmrights.

I'd certainly consider buying a 16mm version if it's an item I really want. In the old days, the cost was offputting, but nowadays it's very difficult to spend too much on new releases!

just want to leave a little update here ...

i`m still alive but had to concentrate on some other things.
back on board here i was shocked about what happend to derann
because i had in mind to visit the uk this year and say hello to the guys.
to give you a little update about releases...
the whole thing goes slower as expected and i will do a big jump
if i get some positive answers from some companys.
as we all know it`s depending on licenses. ok, some people don`t care about that but thats a different story.

in the meantime i talked to some guys, got some offers for master sources regarding older/classic movies in full lenght.
honestly, 90% of it was crap. the other 10% i will think about it, maybe good for some kind of selected scene reel.

thats it so far.

back on board ;-)

2012 is not so fresh but let me say a happy and lucky year to all of you at first!
i had to care about some things for a while which came up unexpected and hit me with a little bang.
be sure the whole project is not dead! it goes on step by step.
the possibilities are growing and now it`s not only about trailers.

full lenght features are not in the discussion. not now nor in the near future but what do you think about edited versions?
1 reel, 2 or maybe 3 like in the past?
from my point of view a one reel cut roundabout 15min doesn`t make so much sense, except it`s a special selected scene of a movie. 3 reels ...hm maybe a lot wouldn`t like to pay for that(?)

replys about this are welcome!

Hi Oli!

Thanks to your time and dedication to this great hobby.

A few years back, we (forum members) discussed some excellent, "self-contained" 15 minute scenes that would be excellent super 8 releases, and would no doubt sell very well.

I remember one being the opening battle scene from "Saving Private Ryan". Another was the fire-engine / crane / pickup truck chase from "Terminator 3". These would fit nicely on a 400 foot reel, and probably would not need editing, except maybe for titles.

James.

Oli - good to hear that you're still trying to make some releases happen. Regarding edited versions I think 600' versions can potentially be very good, as seen in releases such as 'The Wicked Lady' and 'Capricorn One', but I also wouldn't rule out more economical releases that feature (e.g.) an exceptional scene on a 200' reel, such as the suggestion from 'Terminator 3'.
