Does anyone happen to have audio files of the soundtracks to the three reel digests of The Exorcist and Where Eagles Dare? I just picked up stunning German prints of both. Before I start the arduous task of re-recording the German sound into English by stopping and starting the DVD's I thought I would check if anyone has uploaded the English soundtracks. I know it's a long shot but I thought I'd give it a shot!

Brian,

No files, however I can loan you my prints of both titles if that would help.

I have raised an idea long time ago (I think 6 years ago) that we set up an account at any free website that we can store covers and audio files.

Nowadays there are a lot of free websites such as 4shared.com that can store files (picture, movie, audio) almost to unlimited size.

Anyone want to start?

Hmmm, Doug, let me think about that... I never actually tried to record from one projector to another. I guess there's no reason why that shouldn't work. I wonder if there would be any hum/projector noise interference. Has anyone ever tries say going from one GS1200 to another?

Brian, I think the result will be quite disappointing. Beside the hum, I am also thinking the noises both from the projector motor and the recording head.

Instead of stopping and playing DVD, why don't you edit the video first on Windows Movie Maker (this software is always bundled in any Windows system).

It is very simple just cut and paste. Once you have done with the editing you can re-record to your 8mm.

But I would suggest you downgrade the DVD files into smaller size file such as VCD or MP4. At this stage you will get low quality video (downgrade picture) but still good enough stereo sound.

ps: Editing film using smaller size files is faster (because the limited memory we have on our domestic computer) than using the original DVD files which is very bulky on size. Eventually, we only need the audio, so video quality can be disregarded

Hi Brian, what do you mean by 'stunning' prints ? Did you actually find a copy on Agfa or some LPP stock? I have been through many Exorcist reels but they have always been Koadak SP at the best.

Winbert's idea is excellent. I have a 400ft marketing German print with German sound of "raiders of the lost ark", I have been looking for the English sound file to change the soundtrack of the film. I think the idea of creating a soundtrack bank might be helpful to many people in this forum.

Personally, I love this idea of file sharing soundtracks (I'm still looking for the soundtrack to the Kempski / Derann trailer release of "Guns For Sans Sebastian")...could be copyright issues I suppose, but, hey, no more than sharing movie titles [Wink] ...

Brian, I once set about the "daunting" task of re-recordng my 400ft version of The Omen II - Piccolo version into English using my trusty Goko editor and the DVD, thinking, here we go, two weeks later...but to my suprise, I was able to "ease" in the English dialogue, with a little patience, in less than a few hours using the superimpose recording...and I managed to get all the levels to match...lovely sound; shame the damn thing is now red!

Obviously, it depends how dialogue heavy the reel is, but I've since used this technique a lot, and with a little patience and persistence, the playback results, even on big systems, can be flawless.

And far less brutal to the precious print than using a projector.

Winbert; I know what you mean, but I once took a recording of a 600ft Derann release from my Elmo ST-1200HD directly from the output (I think to mini-disc at the time) and then used the recording to re-dub music edits back into the same movie using the Goko editor.

The results were flawless (and let me tell ya, I'm NOT easy to please!), so whilst I wouldn't go directly projector to projector, the access to a print might still be beneficial if you can capture the soundtrack in a digital form to start with.

So it can be done! With perseverence!

But file sharing of soundtracks would be good!

Brian, I've created MPEG's of the three reels but you have to cut in the 400ft version to get a match. Others have done this successfully and once you have the 400ft, the Piccolo 3x400ft and a copy of the mpeg's on DVD (which I can do for you sometime but not for a while given my 100 hour a week workload) then you shouldn't have too much trouble.

John - That would be great when you have time. I have the 400' digest as well but because the quality and framing difference (the 400' is a bit better) I was thinking of only editing in the opening scenes at the dig in Iraq. We'll see. But having the MPEG of the audio would help. No rush...
