What is the different between them?

Why some people bother to use hand cranked rewind while we can enjoy more our life by using the projector rewind feature?.

If the reason is to save the projector's belt and gears, than, it does make a sense. But why not buying a cheap projector for then used spesifically for rewinding films?

Your input please.

The conventional wisdom is that hand rewinding saves wear on the projectors belts and gears, and it also permits easier inspection, lubrication, and repair of the film. For my up to 600 ft reels I use an old beat up Eumig S802 solely for the purpose of rewinding, and for lubricating and polishing the film.
For my 800 and 1200 ft reels I usually rewind on the Elmo GS1200.

I like to watch the reels spin! [Big Grin]

Hand rewinding, when done properly, is also much kinder to film. In my opinion, any serious collector should ALWAYS use hand rewinds.

I use hand winders all the time for both 8mm and 16mm and never use the projector. The reason, its more gentler on film plus you have more control over the range of speed on the rewind.

I heard if you do it too often you may grow hair on your palms. [Big Grin]

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I do the same thing as Paul. I have an old Japanese made projector that is only good for rewinds, (scratches the hell out of films!), and it actually has a much faster rewind than my Eumig 926 or my two Chinon 9500's and, as others have said, it does keep the wear and tear down on the motors in the projectors hence, in theory, they will last longer.

I do both but prefer the bench rewinds. I like sitting at the bench inspecting, cleaning, editing etc. Some times the projector rewinds the film loose on the reels and I take them to the bench and do it by hand anyway.

It's like automatic vs. manual shift in a car...I like shifting gears...it gives you more control.
