Was this the first 8mm sound projector? I think it is a Cirse Vox.

I don't see any speaker - just motor.

Paul I don't think so. I believe Kodak came out with the first 8mm sound projector in the late 1950's. I have never seen this projector from 1961, interesting.

Hi Paul,

Brings back a few memories! I don't know if the Cirse was the first standard 8mm sound projector, but it certainly was one of my first projectors, and an excellent machine. No built-in speaker, but the projector came in it's own fitted case which had a speaker enclosed in the case, and after removing the projector from the case, you would run the speaker lead from the case back, then close the back of the case which would then double as a screen speaker, then plug up the lead into the projector's amplifier base. The Cirse had a 400ft reel capacity.

I also owned at around the same period another standard 8mm sound projector which came out of the same stable as the Cirse so to speak, which was called a "Silma SONIK 8", both these projectors were manufactured in Rivoli Torinese, Italy. Both projectors had the same Sound-Head arrangment, same film path arrangment, both had 400ft capacity, with slight variation to the amplifier controls, and the Sonik 8mm had a 21v-150w lamp. I still have 2 of the Sonik 8mm projectors, (one I keep as a spares machine).

Thanks Ian. This projector (Cirse-Vox) was first advertised in the June 1958 edition of ACW for 157 pounds and 10 shillings. In the same issue there is a detailed description of the projector which notes that it is based on a slightly earlier version known as the Cometson which debuted at the 1957 UK Photo Fair. Any 8mm stripe sound projector earlier than this?

Hi Paul,

To be honest, I have never heard of a Cometson projector. I'll try to upload a picture below of the Silma SONIK 8 standard 8mm sound projector that I have now, it's real retro in looks. (I never have success in downloading photos on here, but I'll try).

Oh well, I did try with the picture,Paul, but, as usual, it gave me the run around, which I've got no time for, most other sites I use are user friendly when it comes to downloading a photo. I did try [Mad]
