If a movie has optical sound, does it only have optical or can I use it on a non-optical projector?
Thanks

Are you asking about super8 or 16mm?
the vast majority of S8mm commercial films have a magnetic soundtrack. There are some optical sound 8mm prints about, mostly but not exclusively ex-airline prints, (as Osi well knows!
To play these with sound you will need a higher end projector, eg Elmo ST 1200HD or GS1200 and a very few other makes. If you run an optical print on a projector with magnetic sound facility only you will not hear the soundtrack.
I have never seen an 8mm print with both types of soundtracks.
Some 16mm projectors have mag/opt sound, I have one, but someone more experienced in 16mm could tell you whether or not there are 16mm prints with 2 soundtracks.

I've never seen a super 8 movie with both optical and magnetic sound. I do know that some 16mm movies have both magnetic and optical sound.

Okay, thanks. It was Super 8 I was thinking of and was browsing the lists linked at bfcc.biz ... Then I stay clear of the optical sounds for now ... Want a GS1200 in the future, but first I want a decent library ... How many movies do all of you have? I am talking reels, not just full features (of which I have none)
I am at about 50+ now, when the last 10 or so pops in my mailbox

Lets be clear on the term "reels", a reel of film is a length of film
determined by the studios that runs between 8-10 minutes.
Therefore a 400' film is a 2 reel film.Some collectors confuse reels
with spools. An 8 reel feature is usually supplied on 4 x 400 spools.

Okay, I am one of those who counts spools :-)
Thanks for clarifying, I was not aware of this.

Perhaps some of you have known this but I rather re-post that some 8mm optical films have dual sound track, as seen on the below scan:
Amazing to see that how narrow is the second track and yet it still can be read.
I do not know what stereo (dual track) optical projector available in the market. Anyone knows ?
cheers,

Hi,
AFAIK this wasn't stereo but a dual-language-airline-print. Unfortunately AFAIK the matching projectors haven't been available without a jumbo-jet ;-)
