What do you prefer for splicing? I tried cement for the first time today, had some problems getting it to stick properly on some movies. Is there a wrong and a right side to apply the cement?

Tapes was easier for me.

I have always used tape.

I also use tape however cement is fine on Acetate film, but dont try if on the later polyester film stock...it wont work, use tape for that one.

Graham.

I use cement if I can, tape if I can't!

Tape works better on this smaller format, where cement appears to work better on the higher guages. Tapes less destructive.

I have always used clear tape, since I have long play systems, but I store my prints on cores, so tape works better for me.

Always used tape on both 8mm (Wurker/CIR) & 16mm (CIR).

Wasn't there an ultrasonic splicer once made for polyester stock? At a rather high cost, thinking in the region of £500 and that's 20 years ago.

Ciro roll tape. Never felt the need to use cement. BTW, do cement splices cover the soundtracks?

They look hard to find, or am I mistaken (Ciro tape rolls) and they don't cover the perforations, do they? Won't that make a sharp edge that can bend a little?

Cement is now functioning okay for me ... Tested a little today and got the hang of it ... They will lose a frame, half of each end of splice, not sure if you'll hear it, only put on leaders.

Thanks for your inputs

With the Circa Guilitene splicer the tape is cut, punctured, then folded over to make a perfect, strong splice that is barely detectable if at all when the film is run. This is what I use.

Hi Vidar, there is a chap on the forum selling a Kohlmatic splicer
which if I remember is a motorised cement splicer that splices with a flush join.

Maybe it's bought by me? I got a motorized one on eBay a couple of weeks ago. Haven't tried it yet though

Will test if it's better than the Rank 3 way I use for cement now

I have that same splicer Kohlmatic splicer and use it to do my super 8 prints mostly leaders but sometime in the main print with good results. Do also own the kodak splicer and the ciro as well.

I bought two similiar ones, the Rank 3 Way and the Arrow was looking 99% identical. I did test the motorized one, I can't see how you can get it to not lose a frame, though. It was good for leader, but tape would keep one more frame from what I gather.

Thanks for the replies
