Was thinking about Stars Wars being the most wanted title which has a cult following.

Is there anything that is worth having in your collection which is your most wanted release.

As we know there is some quality features to be added with the company in Germany via The Reel Image.

All thanks to original German Neg's with some being IB Tech prints. OHMSS is one print that is outstanding along with Jedi which i have had in my collection before moving to 35mm.

What's available at present via German labs that is worth having in your collection.

What I would want is : Star Wars, Empire Strikes, Return of the Jedi, Alien, Aliens, Terminator and for good measure Revenge of the Sith

Unreleased titles (I still not sure about this) ... John Carpenter's The Thing, Escape From New York, Blade Runner and Wild at Heart

I yet to see evidence of the Germans having access to anything
except the same dozen or so titles that are trotted out ad infinitum
including "Empire Strikes Back".It's time this legend was put to bed.

Well i have Terminator which is very hard to find in 35mm or 16mm unless i'm greatly mistaken.

I also hold quiet a few of the master 35mm prints that where used for Super 8 releases of Grease and the Matrix to name just a few.

Along with Ray Harryhausen classic the 7th voyage of sinbad 35mm print which was loaned to make the Super 8 master.

I know that the 35mm print didn't come from Germany, it
was the UK when DFS printed Sinbad, unless the Germans have done one since.

Hugh, the Sinbad print i have was used to make the DCR Super 8 release. Not one of the best prints as it was on the turn being on Kodak SP film stock along with occasional jumps or should i say cuts.

Now if the pre-print source came from an IB Tech print it would be worth the money alone just like Shane.

The print used in Derann's release I understand was to have come
from a German source,but that fell through as they couldn't get one.Therefore a 35mm print was located here in the UK,but
unfortunately the final minutes were water damaged.Suggestions
were made to Derek to ask the labs to make the print slightly
more "pink" to try to hide the marks, but thankfully it was left
alone.The chap I spoke to about Sinbad,even apologised as he
knew it was a film I had pushed for Derek to release, but I was
just grateful that at least it had got onto 8mm at all in feature
form,and makes a nice companion piece to "Jason". I can't say
that I've noticed any jumps Robert, and the colour is very good
I can't see any marked difference between it and the 16mm
IB print, just a shame about the watermarks.

Well I guess the print looked better when loaned back then as it is now slowly fading. Still plenty of colour left. Also when making prints from a 35mm release print colour and contrast can be slightly changed pushed pulled process while in the lab to compensate for any damage.

Thou from the original print to the final print side by side you will notice a big difference in colour as this gets compressed when using a reduction techniques. I suppose that’s one of the reasons why it looks as good as a 16mm print.

Probably why a lot of the IB Tech 16mm prints go for big money these days as sometimes the colour is over saturated which makes these prints stunning compared to 35mm.

You’ll notice jump cuts or should I say splices towards the end of each reel.

With the 35mm pre- print that was used for Grease for the Derann Super 8 release side by side comparison there is a big difference/shift in colour along picture ratio which is always the case in most scope reductions.

Can you throw some light on the idea Robert that the Germans can
print anything, as it is not going to be very cost effective in the
process that reducing 35MM to s/8 entails, what with negs and
interpos etc, surely if the prints could be directly reduced to
std 8mm, as Derek sometimes did in the past, thereby reducing
costs and getting very good print quality.I think that some
collectors would go for that,those that can handle std 8mm,
I know I would.

Well speaking from experience print quality is all down to the pre-print material provided. Either original camera negative elements or a 35mm release print which is a reduction which would be second best.

Source material and developing optical elements in developing is the key element where you can print anything. I know the Germans labs that have carried out the work on the following prints Jedi, OHMSS etc have used original German negatives or on rare occasions when not available 35mm release reduction prints.

They have a vast collection of material as they have either held on to the 35mm negatives or spare 35mm release prints and never returned them to the copyright holders.

So if it is possible to avoid making a 16mm neg and interpos etc to standard 8mm this would greatly reduce the cost and production which would make this cost effective if the source was exceptional just like the Disney deal that Derek made with the studio in providing 16mm negatives from original pre-print 35mm master camera negs. Some of these being the best quality in terms of picture thanks to Rank Labs etc.
